One of those days that lead me to believe that the Amish might actually have something there...

get to work,
SOMETHING is wrong with all the classroom virtual machines
Email server is down.

and i'm greeted this morning by a work order that says simply:
Needs new IP address for laptop. Needs before 11:00.
that's THE ENTIRE FREAKIN WORK ORDER.*

O_o

..... maybe they aren't happy with the ip address they have? perhaps they used that one all up and it's getting too hot so now they need another one? maybe they would like one that has their birthday in it?
i have to check to see if we charge extra for "personalized" ip addresses. if it doesn't cost too much i wanna get 10.4.20.75

Valis
(i wonder if you have to renew it every year...)
(now i have to go around searching for what the ACTUAL PROBLEM is... i bet you a million gazilion dollars it has nothing to do with an ip address.)
*there's a reason we call it the "helplessdesk"

This one was a happy marriage of TSH and Customer Suck! I feel accomplished having fulfilled two criteria in one.

I spent yesterday going through a long list of things which should in now way, shape, or form, have been escalated to tier 3.

The winner was a woman who was complaining, among other equally not-our-fault things, that her email was taking two days to get from her friend's house to hers. She was also having problems with her hair styling website. She spent about an hour after I called her listing off user errors she's had, and finishing off by telling me I had a choice between giving her a refund or a new computer.

Why do I get the feeling she voted for Ted Stevens?

I am counting that call as a success, though. I convinced her to either give the computer to her teenagers to play with, or donate it to one of the many nonprofits who refurbishes old computers for schools.

Number of laptops and/or USB storage devices from this department that have traveled to India in calendar-year 2008: 8

Number of the above that came back with at least one Worm or Trojan: 7 (The 8th was a Mac.)

I feel like I should give out condoms and penicillin to anyone who goes there.

While explaining the website builder we have the question from the customer...

"So is it like myspace?!"

no....no it's not like myspace...you're a failure.

Hey folks, new to the community but...yeah, I think I dig it. Here's a snippet from a chatroom some friends and I hang out on, I figure y'all might appreciate the incident as well. I've been handholding (over the phone) a less-than-skilled (but far better paid than me) IT professional in the faraway land of Denver, CO, attempting to fix her company's backup woes for her:

text behind cut, marginal swearing, names changed to protect the innocent )

Had a call from my mother yesterday. While I was at work, which is never a good sign. Anyway, after we'd got past the real reason for her calling (message to give to my mother-in-law) she said "oh, by the way, Uncle M is having problems with his internet. Apparently it works some of the time and not the rest". Groaning inwardly as I know damn well he's done something stupid, I told her to get my cousin to check all the wires are plugged in properly and for him to let me know once he'd done it.

Spoke to her again a few minutes ago. She was on the phone to my aunt last night, and relaying the message to my cousin while they were there. Paul roots round the back of the computer and then mum heard "oh, that could explain it". Apparently one of the cables was held together with masking tape.

Someone shoot me now. Please?
