[identity profile] katyism.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] techrecovery
Hi, for those of you who don't know me, I'm not some newbie who joined the wrong community, I've been here for a while but my tech-supporting-all-day ass needs some goddamn tech support of my own.

But I had a quick question. For more "advanced" Windows support questions that can't be answered by communities such as [livejournal.com profile] computerhelp, is there another place where one might find advice on LJ? I think the userinfo of our fair community admonishes actually asking for help here, so I'm asking you guys where you get help instead of asking you guys for help...

...if that makes sense.

First, how to ask questions the smart way:
http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/smart-questions.html
and also How to ask a question: http://support.microsoft.com/?id=555375

Like have Google search LJ for you:

or:

Thank you

and you did not follow your own guidance why?

Though, every one of us needs a gentle reminder now & again... :)

well, my suggestion would be to keep trying you lazy ass (hey, you admitted it). Otherwise, you will never learn - and you will be just like the LUsers we complain about.

Google is just like any other tool. There are help files, books, cheat guides, but sometimes you just type in what you want & hit the button - and a miracle happens.

There are other more advanced IT communities on LJ, such as defcon_defcon, hardware, ih8spyware, infosec, it_admin, it_professional, itprofessionals, itsecurity, linux, linuxnewbies, lj26000, virusnews, war_driving, wardrivers, wireless.... look at the info pages of this communities members, I am sure you will find more.

There are also web sites & forums for WinDoz support.

you're well on the way to being a sysadmin then.

we're all lazy :)

ie, will quite happily spend hours writing scripts to do jobs that take 30 seconds.

Valiskeogh is right, that's my usual source when I'm stumped.

However, with that said - we don't support ordinary users who just walk in with a question that a good google won't resolve, this is well known and well documented.

You're one of our own. We recognize you as such. Hell, I knew you were a regular in here when I saw the name. You can ask a question and expect an answer as opposed to a sound drubbing and advice on how best to eliminate yourself from the gene pool. ^_^

you know what,
this just reminded me of a problem I'VE been having that google, ms, and everything else i've looked at just can't solve...

i wonder if we can make up some "tech support stumbler" questions...

You could ask the question as part of our own journal entries and post the link here.

I think that is within the rules!

The info page for this community does say "If you want to go to a community that is set up to answer technical questions, go to: [livejournal.com profile] tech_support."

There are instances in which we will answer questions that are really stumpers. Usually a bit of groveling is required (yours is *excellent*).

God, this kind of techie attitude gives me a big f*cking stitch. As others have said, I've seen you around here, so why not at least find out what you need to know. And I have seen more than one instance of people helping out with a quick query.

Summarise your problem in a couple of sentences. Show your working (ie. what you have tried). :-)

Then at least I can either: a) give a quick and easy answer, or b) point you somewhere helpful, or c) none of the above.

maybe it would be easier to just ASK the question ?
whats the problem in ANY way ?
F.E. there is no use to ask google for "what is the meaning of love"
or: "my harddrive wont work when its not connected to IDE Bus"

there is a lot of stuff where AUTOMATICS cant help you with. so, just ASK :)

Heh. This all reminded me of when I wrote the Information Security folks at our company thanking them for the interview and asking them what I could do in the future to become better qualified for such a position, and they said... wait for it...

"Google 'information security'."

Um, thanks. Guess I suck a lot more than even I thought!

heh. Totally unrelated, I know. Sorry.

Heh, agreed. To both.

They could have been honest and said that the only way I could have gotten the job was to be friends with the interviewers, because that's who ended up getting the job. ;)
