Seriously. Last week we sent out over 32,000 update disks to our clients (I work for the government indirectly) and on the CD we printed a phone number for everyone to call in case they had issues installing this update (it's SP2 fer cripe's sake but that is another story). Guess what the number was that was printed on the CD? 1-800-877-7425... sounds innocent enough, but it is one number off from our number and guess where it goes... well, dial it. LOL If I have one more client mention the "porn line" I am going to destroy them with my very thoughts. On the same note, if you maximize the installation while it is minimized, all it says is "Magical Mystery Tour" in a CMD box... ya, I am just wondering what dude was doing the night dude was making said CD to send out... a bit of "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds" and a bit of porn on the brain?

I have the unfortunate luck of having to handle overflow Sales chats in addition to my tech support duties. Setting the scene, this was a conversation in a Sales chat with someone who wasn't what I'd call the brightest bulb in the first place. After answering most of his stupid questions, we get to the portion of the chat where I am first propositioned and then accused of being a chat bot. One of those two things is new to me. Cut for your protection. )

Got Vista?

Heh.

Our sysadmin team (whose department I'm temping in this week instead of my usual NOC duties) have just received and are currently arguing over our first escalation from the helpdesk about Windows Vista, namely because no one there can troubleshoot it yet, and no one here wants to touch it. The best advice we can give is to rely on google and other online help forums (which are in short supply, understandably), and anything juicy or worth knowing pass back to us. Sad, huh?

Well, it made me smile, the first time this Friday afternoon.

I can expect the current trickle of Vista callers to slowly start increasing into a torrent in the next few weeks, and for us to receive more clueless escalations from techies who haven't been trained (like that ever happens here) or even exposed to Vista. Has the Vista Confusion Effect™ infected your workplace helpdesk yet?

The new job is going swell. However, it seems I just can't escape the stupid (though I heard this one second hand - thank the gods).

One of the other netengs was recounting a conversation he had with someone in the NOC. They were discussing a NIC upgrade for a major applications server. The NOC guy had apparently been told by the systems guys that that it was a waste of time upgrading the server's network interface card to a 1Gb/s NIC because "our core network only has 100Mb/s of bandwidth anyway".

...yeah, this guy really believed that the core network for a multi-national corporation was designed so that it can only handle 100Mb/s of traffic at any one time.

We had a bloody good laugh at that one over lunch.
