Got Vista?

Heh.

Our sysadmin team (whose department I'm temping in this week instead of my usual NOC duties) have just received and are currently arguing over our first escalation from the helpdesk about Windows Vista, namely because no one there can troubleshoot it yet, and no one here wants to touch it. The best advice we can give is to rely on google and other online help forums (which are in short supply, understandably), and anything juicy or worth knowing pass back to us. Sad, huh?

Well, it made me smile, the first time this Friday afternoon.

I can expect the current trickle of Vista callers to slowly start increasing into a torrent in the next few weeks, and for us to receive more clueless escalations from techies who haven't been trained (like that ever happens here) or even exposed to Vista. Has the Vista Confusion Effect™ infected your workplace helpdesk yet?

We are just waiting for it to happen here. No training either, as usual.

Worse than that, I've had to deal with vista support myself! And I can tell you that Java on vista is a bit dodgy..

Our shop took a pro-active stance towards Vista; Word has repeatedly been broadcast to users that we do not support Vista and will not, until at least 2008. Yeah, management! And they are in the process of getting us Vista and Office 2007 training this year. Sweet!

So far, we've had a few calls from work about Vista (how the hell did they get it installed?) but most of the calls are from users at home, with their personal machines. All we can tell them is they're on their own and then close the ticket.

All the machines we would support are sent with corporate images built with XP Pro. We are not deploying Vista or Office 2007 any time soon, even though we are licensed for 500 installs of Vista Business and Office 2007 Professional Plus. Some of those licenses may or may not be in use by us. You know, for "evaluation" purposes.

We were never trained on Vista and now at least 1/4 of my calls seem to be Vista-related. Yay google and acting like I know what the fuck I'm talking about.

Not as of yet, however I will gladly let them know we do not support Vista. Just like we say we do not support Mac (I will generally help them out though as I am a Mac user, myself and knwo their pain).

But if they installed Microsoft's latest viru....errr... operating system, they are on their own for now.

So far the only people here allowed Vista are techs (for learning) and Developers for, well, building steaming piles of code that barely run. We're told to chat amoungst ourselves and see what we can come up with, while the developers are told that they have to fend for themselves until we get up to speed.

As for end users? Nope. No Vista for You!

we've had a few requests come in for information on whether or not we have copies of vista and office 2007 available for install, but those have been from our developers and testing folks for the sake of getting their software compatible. of course we don't yet. we haven't even gotten any vista/2007 related software through our volume liscensing agreement. in truth, we have an upgrade copy for office 2007 but no license key. hell, we had to outlaw IE7 due to incompatibility with some of the web systems.

We've had a few vista calls. It's not that hard. Just remember, search is your friend.

"Where's printer settings?" click on the search bar and type in "Printer" TADA! There's the printer settings.

We are not supporting it yet either. One smart user decided to get a copy himself and install it on his laptop and then brought it in after he broke all the standard software (like anti-virus and VPN) which is not compatible with Vista yet.

He presented it at the help desk with a "now you have to support Vista" comment and a big grin.

So we imaged it with XP and handed it back.

He left saying he was going to install Vista again and maybe it would work this time. I am starting a pool on how many times we can repeat this cycle before he gives up.

He broke company policy for installing unauthorized software on it.

He gets no laptop now.

Or one that only uses like, Win 3.1

Yes, I am that evil.

8-)

We have to support it.

Of course, there's no setting in the LAN setup for "Broadband that is always on".

Ugh.

We do have a couple of users with vista but we aren't supporting it until 2008. The fun part is getting the machine on our network. vista doesn't seem to like to co-operate. We are also not handing out office 2007 to atleast this summer until then its given to the techs to try out.

Roadrunner is offering free copies of Vista Business to people when they sign up for the business class accounts.

I feel very sorry for the Time Warner support already.

we're supposed to give "best effort" support for Vista. Luckily we only deal with Internet connectivity, and only deal with OS issues as they relate to 'net -- link speed, dhcp and so on.

We have the benefit of having a pretty good wiki with decent screenshots, and there's always Zen, modemhelp, etc.

The advantages of working corporate helpdesk.

"You're running Vista? One moment while I kill your ports and account, then call security and have them throw you out of the building before reimaging your workstation for your replacement."

Nobody here has Vista, thankfully. And nobody will for at least a year.
