I do support for a web-based app. Starting this morning, this message pops up for any client upon logging in:

"Dear Customer,

xxxxxxx Software will be closed on Thursday and Friday, November 23 and 24 to spend the Thanksgiving Holiday with our families. Should you experience any technical difficulties with xxxxx during this time, please call our toll free support line at (xxx) xxx-xxxx.

Thank you for your continued patronage. And on behalf of everyone at xxxxxxx, Happy Thanksgiving!

xxxxxxx Software, Inc."

The "toll free support number" RINGS TO MY FUCKING CELL PHONE WHEN WE'RE NOT OPEN. Even when we have a holiday or I'm on vacation. Some holiday; I'm going to spend part of Thursday and all of Friday on the phone, no doubt.

(Edit: The pay situation came into question, and I realize I forgot to include that. I am paid for the holidays, plus I can claim the time I spend on the phone as counting toward time off in following weeks. Sorry for the confusion.)

This is your semi-friendly BanHammer Wielding Moderator (of DOOM!) here with a little Public Service Announcement.

Folks, this community is largely for venting about lusers who piss us off. While I realize that we are in general a cranky lot, I would like to request that we not flame each other. ( or if we must, that we keep it at least something approaching civil.) There's more then enough Drama on LJ without us adding to _that_ pile.

And while everyone is entitled to their opinons, I'd also like to point out that the First Amendment is *mostly* enforced, subject to the moderator team's whims. I myself use a simple method for enforcing this, and it boils down to one rule: Don't be a dick. (ETA: Some of the other mods may be a bite more harsh, or a bit more lax. YMMV.)

To wit: If someone says STFU, Please honor their request.

We now return you to the Hell that is work. HAND.

Oh.

I work in a call center, as a service tech I. This means I stay the hell off phones (woohoo!!) but I fix the computers as the reps break them (sigh.). It's not a bad job, and I have great coworkers, so I'll stay here for a while.

We reciently lost one member of our small department, however, and so we're interviewing hopeful replacements. I look forward to a replacement as that means I'm finally off the night shifts.

In our interviews, we give applicants sample work requests to see how they'd go about troubleshooting issues. Even if you don't know our systems, it's a good way to see if you've ever, oh, seen a computer before.

We have a giveaway question. It looks something like this(important stuff changed, of course):

Your message did not reach some or all of the intended recipients.

The following recipient(s) could not be reached:

You do not have permission to send to this recipient. For assistance, contact your system administrator.
<BIG87SRV.prod.scoobydoocompany.com #5.7.1>

How would you troubleshoot this issue?

Sadly, no one has gotten it yet.
Until tonight.

The janitor - you know, the stereotypical slightly-past-middleaged woman who is angry at the world and who cannot ever do anything right on the computer EVER, finally has learned to type a word document but still hasn't learned to save it to a networked drive (just choose F: instead if C:!) so she keeps losing stuff - put in a work request saying she tried to send an email, got this reply, and would like the permissions set up right.

I'm just going to cry now.
