Okay, so there is ClamWin available, but its biggest flaw is that it doesn't do on access scanning.

Not any more!

Get ClamWin from
http://www.clamwin.com/

and install it, then get Winpooch from
http://winpooch.free.fr/home/

once Winpooch is installed, go to the config options and select "use debug privilege" - you then have totally free and Free anti virus software! With the speed with which ClamWin update their defs they would probably have caught that nasty Word virus, especially as ClamWin nicely integrates into LookOut and Internut Exploiter...

EDITED TO ADD (from comment below):

looking at the test on this site:
http://www.overclockers.com/articles1260/

the virus total was 10312, Clam detected 9917 (over 96%), AVG detected 9507 (over 92%)

Shiva H. Vishnu, how the hell do you people keep dropping your damn cellphones into water?  Our Verizon rep gave us 9 FRU's two months ago, we've burned through 6 of them already!  If you guys are that butterfingered, what the heck are you doing in the construction industry?

Team,

In an effort to continuously measure and improve the services we provide to our Clients, we are announcing a new practice.

In the past, lack of capability to document Rep callback activities (e.g. reminding the Rep to return defective equipment) has hampered our ability to demonstrate value and excellent performance on certain services provided to the Client.

Fortunately, we have recently acquired technology that enables us to record outbound calls to Reps. Utilization of this technology will be critical in measuring even more of the services that we provide for our Clients.

Effective June 1st, 2006, we will begin to use this technology.

Oh, sure. You're recording our outbound calls... for our protection. To help us out in the level 1 trenches. I believe this with every fiber of my being.

No, really.
