Okay, so there is ClamWin available, but its biggest flaw is that it doesn't do on access scanning.

Not any more!

Get ClamWin from
http://www.clamwin.com/

and install it, then get Winpooch from
http://winpooch.free.fr/home/

once Winpooch is installed, go to the config options and select "use debug privilege" - you then have totally free and Free anti virus software! With the speed with which ClamWin update their defs they would probably have caught that nasty Word virus, especially as ClamWin nicely integrates into LookOut and Internut Exploiter...

EDITED TO ADD (from comment below):

looking at the test on this site:
http://www.overclockers.com/articles1260/

the virus total was 10312, Clam detected 9917 (over 96%), AVG detected 9507 (over 92%)

Just to ask a silly question, but how does this product compare with AVG?

AVG rules

AVG offers free on-demand and on-access scanning, quarantining, cleaning/healing (for some types of infections) and incoming/outgoing POP3/SMTP scanning.

The POP3/SMTP scanner is really cool because it auto-proxies all port 25/110 traffic. You don't need to reconfigure your mail apps.

It can also apply SSL/TLS encryption, so if the mail servers support it, you can still use secure channels. Even Symantec and McAfee can't do that.

I dunno, but it's what I pass out to everyone simply because it is legally redistributable (AVG isn't).

To the OP: I'll have to give this a try on my Windoze box.

I just upgraded from AVG to ClamWin -- I did so because AVG is not really configurable (the free version isn't; have no idea about the paid version). It will scan every day around whatever time you set.

I don't care for this, so I changed programs -- also the OPs statement from Overclockers.com swayed me a tad.

Besides, I'm all for the open-source thing.

Still wondering where your icon is from. I swear I've seen it in other places.

My default icon is one I drew my self. It's cropped down from an image in one of my galleries.

Where else have you seen it?

The other option is not to run Windows at all :)
