It's amazing to me how hard it is for some people to accomplish certain things. One of the things our supervisors at work constantly remind us of is that though these people may not be good at computers, chances are they're much better than us at something else. Which is true. In fact, this is how the first system of trade began: the barter system. I fix your car, you fix my computer. I landscape your yard, you pull my wisom tooth. Whatever.

But I wonder, do I really want someone operating on me who doesn't understand the difference between the right and left mouse buttons?

My favorite example of this is pilots. Most aircraft have no small amount of electronic avionics onboard these days. While they don't work the same as a standard PC, computers do have a striking number of similarities when it comes to their operation. Especially when it comes to pointing and clicking on things. Or even such simple things as "Ok, tell me what's on your screen. What is it doing?"

I wouldn't want him flying my plane.

Agreed! Quite a lot of our callers do things like design fighter planes and missiles... and they can't find the Start button, and insist it isn't there.

"Oh, I can't find your eject button. It must not be there either!"
"Oh, I can't find the MISSILE LAUNCH ABORT button. It must not be there!"

On the other hand, this could all be a government conspiracy. Plausible deniability!

Well, at least the eject button can't change position :)

But someone who can't find the F1 key on their keyboard, or the power button on their PC, or their DVD drive...?

Yes, I try to keep an open mind about such people, but it is uphill work. Even my mom knows that the button says Start.

Considering the number of, "Doctor amputated the wrong leg!" stories I've seen in the last several years, I'd say the answer is no.

I've been using a computer since I was 5 and somehow I still have get the left and right mouse buttons backwards. No where else do I ever have this problem but with mouse buttons, and what really gets me, I know that I get them backwards and it doesn't stop me. Weird...
