(X-posted from my journal, it regards ibm/lenovo tech support, thought you guys might like a look)

here's the story. Eric at work struggles for hours with a particular computer and it's strange problems.
he FINALLY finds the solution to the problem, a particular part is bad and needs to be replaced. now, at first it would seem that this is a somewhat trivial part, but it's exceptionally annoying. in truth, we could have found a replacement quite easily, or ran to the store and bought one.
HOWEVER, eric is beyond annoyed at this computer by this time, so he pulls the part out, calls ibm/lenovo cause the computer is under warranty, and tells them to send us a replacement part ASAP.

the next day, we get THIS package in the mail, rush shipped of course:

that's my large (i refuse to call it whatever starbucks calls it) coffee (w/ two shots of espresso) for size comparison.
i proceed to open the box...

aha... packing materials...

the box opening process continues...

digging through the packing materials, i find ANOTHER box.

we're getting closer to our prize!!!

what is in this box might you ask? well, it's got lots of protective foam, and the part we're searching for:

yes kids. you guessed it. THAT BIG box, contained another box, which contained A WATCH BATTERY. yes, it was the battery on the motherboard that was bad. and that's the part that eric called ibm/lenovo and had them replace. and that's how they shipped us the replacement.

CAN ANYONE SAY "OVERKILL" ?

LOL

so... i had to take pics of the box opening... ;)

Valis

I think that's the vendor's silent way of saying "Here, ya big whiner". :)

Hahah thats crazy! =)

It reminds me of when my other half email-ordered a set of manuals from Intel for X86 programming (as they offer to print up the online materials into book form and send them free!)

Only a week or so later, shipped Express UPS from the US to Australia, arrived a MASSIVE carton with 5 very hefty programming books in it.

And it didn't cost us a cent.

Yeah I got that package. I also got in on the AMD x86-64 manuals for free in a comparably sized box.

A few years ago, Apple had a standing repair issue for clock batteries and logic boards of their 603e based computers. The Mac shop I worked at had a deal fixing the machines of an entire school district. We'd get 50-100 machines and a similar number of logic boards and clock batteries. Now, rather than send the batteries in some kind of bulk packaging, we'd get each one in an individual box, about the size of three paperbacks. This went on for a year, until finally, someone at Apple got smart and started sending 50 in one box.

luxury! Dell would begrdgingly send 4 rubber feet in a 9"x5"x1.5" box - with a return label so you could send back the failed original feet to be refurbished.

And people wonder why we're choking to death under the weight of our own waste. Morons.

Well, at least someone turned that around and figured out how to make gas out of garbage.

well, considering the regulations surrounding those batteries im not suprised

They are calssified as Hazmat by the Dot and FAA

several planes have been brought down by a shipment of only two of those little things. Warehouses have also burned down because of single batteries

they are the masters of overpackaging.

Oh, and they make great use of their 'Xerox subsidy' in that they send these chunky tomes on how to use things like a power adapter or supplimental battery...

The spousal unit ordered a battery for and older IBM laptop and it arrived the same way! In fact, I took pics of it too and was thinking of it as I read your post!

I thought Red eye was a non starbucks originated term?
I can usually order them at a non-chain shop and not get the deer in headlights look.

Speaking of Xerox... Ive had Xerox send me a couple packs of solid ink for my Phaser 360 in a huge box, like 18x6x14 (inches), for two packs of two each, solid ink.

The topper is: they didint include much packing material.

You ever tell a customer something that you know is totally reasonable and proper, but the customer, in their ignorance of the technical details of your work, just thinks it looks obviously stupid?

Have you considered the possibility that the shipping/receiving clerks might know something about shipping small boxes that you don't?

Personally, I have no clue, but maybe IBM/Lenovo found that boxes below a certain size got lost in shipping far too often, so now they have a rule that any boxes below that size must be put in a larger box...
