Had to call and educate on CD disposal.. snap.. cut... shred.... (there is a guy in the office who shreds his CDs).

Hm, I think that's a reasonable question, actually, because it can vary according to where you work. In our organisation, certain CDs are "controlled archives", which means they are treated the same way as backup tapes. We need to hand them to a document destruction company who will dispose of them (probably by shredding!) in a secure and auditable fashion.

So maybe the user was familar with those sorts of environments, and really wanted confirmation about whether it was appropriate for them to do it themselves, and what your recommended method was. Some organisations don't view snapping or cutting as sufficient either, or if they are, the destroyed material is not permitted to go out in the usual trash, etc etc....

Yup. I did an internship at the US Attorney's office.

They had a locked bin for those types of CDs and DVDs to make sure they were shredded and destroyed.

I nought a new shredder a year or so ago specifically because it could also shred CDs. Working for a University, there are many federally mandated information protection measures (ie - HIPAA and FERPA) that essentially require that you be able to destroy archive media that may contain any information that those measures consider to be sensitive.

Yep. our main office had a CD shredder purchased for that single reason.

We also started rolling out a new policy and procedure for the computing equipment, but the users were a bit resistant when they found out that they shiny new thinkpad came with a shiny new policy and cast-iron enforcement- and no local admin privledges.
