My name is Jana. That is pronounced "JAH-NUH". When I answer my phone, I state my name. No one EVER gets it right, the most common one I get is "Janice". Closely followed by "Janet".. In fact, it's to the point that when they DO get it right, I go out of my way to help them even more than I need to. I've tried everything, including enunciating to the point of hilarity. I don't even correct them any more...

What are some of the names people come up with for you?

I hear you on the italian names. I've given up giving my last name. In one of my last jobs we were all called Mr or Mrs, I just went with D instead of my whole name. Saves them from trying, saves me from getting ticked off when they pronounce it completely wrong.

yep. I have an Italian last name as well, and have long since given up intruducing myself with it. It invariably gets slaughtered.

I hear you. Same name here. "Michael" is one of the oldest names in Anglo-Saxon history. I cannot understand why the "ae" still throws people. Can't they see that spelling it "Micheal" would cause it to be pronounced "my-KEEL" or "mi-SHELL"?

I answer my phone Paco (Pah-coh)
I get called Marco, Taco, and occasionally Pay-coh.

It's a bit annoying, but amusing.

My Name is Suzi. Most commonly I get Suvi, which is just odd. Otherwise, I get Cindy, Cici, Sissy, Sarah, and Claire, for some reason.

leonie, ami, kaitie...apparently all names that end in an "ee" sound are all freaking interchangeable.

Used to have a co-worker named Bojan (Boy-Yan). It got to the point where if somebody called in asking for any name we didn't recognize, we passed it to him.

"Stan". For some reason when I give out my speal "This is Dan speaking" becomes "This is Stan Speaking" to them.

I also have been called "The guy with the british accent". I am not from Britain.

I often go by "Dave", but I've learned that if my greeting puts a word ending in "S" in front of my name, I will almost always get "Steve". So I don't do that any more.

I don't use my real name, but I get called Derek, Darren, Eric, and David a LOT. Daily. By people that are pysically present enough to see my badge.

There is no D in my name :)

I gave up correcting people a long time ago. It's not worth the stess.

Rarely, but sometimes do I get Stan, Ron, or Ed. *shrug*

Usually they can get my name right. Donna is pretty hard to screw up. What I did get in my last job was people asking if I was Donna when I answered the support line.

I was the only female in support and they knew it.

I answer with "Jeff" but because my voice is so light, I often get called "Steph" or "Stef". Even had one bright bulb argue with me that I was a woman. Clearly my genitalia haven't received that message. :)

Real name: Christian. I get Chris (I hate truncating my name), Jason, Tristan, Andrew (wtf?), Casey, and various others I can't remember right now.

My favorite, which happens a LOT:
"Thank you for calling . . . this is Christian, may I help you?"
"Sorry, what's your name, was it Chris?"
"No, it's Christian; who am I speaking with?"
"Oh, hi Chris, this is . . ."

KILL KILL KILL

We've given up. It's now accepted that somewhere in our office the unpaid and unseen 'Heidi' and 'Bob' are apparently answering the phones. "Well, last time I called Heidi told me..."
Right. Whatever.

One of the nice things about being named Doug is that, while it's not common enough to be boring, it's not so rare that people freak when they hear it.

Or so I thought.

Luser: And what was your name?
Me: Doug.
Luser: How's that spelled?
Me: *boggle* Uh, the common spelling.
Luser: D-U-G-E?
Me: No ma'am, that would be pronounced. "Dooj." My name is spelled D-O-U-G. *click*

Guess what my nickname was on that desk from then on?

It wouldn't bother me if it only happened once or twice, but this is a 1 in 10 call type of thing.

I'm Jessica.

I get Jennifer all the time. However, I get that off and on the phones, so I'm used to it. I really don't bother correcting customers when they say anything wrong. It's a waste of time.

Date: 2006-03-26 08:15 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] bassgirl.livejournal.com
I'm Genifer. I get Jessica a lot. Either that, or people (on and off the phones) correct me to Gen. My name is Genifer, NOT Gen. gah.

And, of course, when i have to go to another department for confirmation on things (I have to answer billing questions too. yuck.), I have to give my employee id, which is the first letter of my first name and last name and some numbers. And every time I have to say "My name is Genifer, that's Genifer spelled with a G, so my id is GT*****." and every time they say "HUH? Jennifer with a V? What?? Oh wait. Wow. That's so weird! I've never seen that before!" etc etc etc.

My name is Scott.

Sometime ago, most of the population secretly got together and voted that my name is actually "Kevin", but never actually told me about it, nor even asked if I was ok with that.

Which I'm not.

I work with a guy that everyone calls Fred. It turns out he is actually called Kevin, but by some coincidence there are two Kevin *lastnames* where I work, so they renamed one of them. Working with the phone and e-mail systems, as I do, for the longest time I thought there were two people, Kevin and Fred, working in the department! Talk about confusing to the outsider!

My name's Rachael. I've been called Rebecca, Rita, Angel, and on one memorable occasion - Heather.

One of the company names I answer the phone as is Lizzy, so naturally I get called that as well.

Guess how many variations there are for Joy.

Start with Joyce. Add all the holiday jokes. Then add Faith, Hope, Love and
Now masculanize it. Jay, Joi, Joye, Joey, Jaw (my favorite WTF).

If God has a sense of humor (and with my family it sure seems like it), it'll let me have a daughter I can abuse with the name Grace.

Yup, shows how intelligent you are. Aren't you a simple minded bastard?

I've been called James, (close, but NO CIGAR!), Jim, Jermy, Jerome, and Charles (by the forman this morning at the new office where I'm putting jacks on some 400+ drops...)

I was close to getting the name James, except that was Mom's ex-hubby's name, and We already had one in the fmaily.

I deal with people by email instead of over the phone. My email is first initial, middle initial, first 6 letters of last name. My initals are "E D", so I have people writing to me all the time calling me Ed. My name is not Ed. In fact, that's why I signed THE EMAIL YOU REPLIED TO "Eric".

I guess I'm lucky in that, working for a small company, I do a lot of work actually going to peoples desks, so they are hard pressed not to remember my name.

That said, in the past I've been called all sorts of things. Certainly the most common is "who's this?" "It's Ed" "oh, hi ted".

Generally though many lusers don't bother listening to the response and just assume you are the person they last spoke to. As such, I've been called by the name of all of my collegues at one time or another.

I'm Rachel.

Once or twice, I thought it a weird twist of luck that someone called me "Lisa".

Alas, it became constant. Rachel and Lisa apparently sound EXACTLY THE SAME when said over the phone. Go figure.
