My VERY FIRST call of the morning, and my co-worker had the privilege of hearing me say this to a customer:

"...and hit enter... The enter key.... On the right side of your keyboard... OK, do you see the backspace key?... the Enter key is about two keys down... Yes, that's it."

Oh. Emm. Gee.

::Grayhawk goes into his bottom drawer and pulls out his "Medicine" bottle and pours a generous amount into his coffee::

It's going to be one of those days, is it?

Maybe you'll be lucky and all of "teh stoopid" was contained in the one call.

said & done...

My mother at that point had never used a computer beyond playing solitaire

Random: two keys down? What's the key in between? I suppose either it was a funky laptop keyboard or US keyboards are different in that respect too.

(*is randomly interested in meaningless details*)

Heh, on my keyboard those two symbols are on entirely different keys, half the keyboard away from each other... :)

The backslash key is between the backspace and the enter key. :)

Ah, thanks. My random curiosity is sated. Finnish keyboards have nothing in between enter and backspace, and \ is in the same key with ? and + to the left of the backspace.

+ is to the left of backspace here too... but / is with ? on my keyboard and \ is with | like the person above me said. :D

This reminds me of the call we got from a user who needed someone to tell him where to find the power button on his laptop. And no, he wasn't a new user.

I get that a lot too. Usually it's from people who think that the button is labeled "Return" and have never actually looked at it. Um, sir, you're not still on that Apple ][ you used in first grade.

It IS labelled "Return". As in, if that button is pressed, the computer will automatically package itself up and ship itself to its manufacturer because the customer is too stupid to use it.

Well, it doesn't say "return" on my computer. Hence my use of the phrase "enter key". :D
