It wasn't about which OS was better people. It was about the users who call TECH SUPPORT and are RETARDED, whom I want to push onto electric fences because I'm a meanspirited person who wants to run an uncomfortable number of amperes through the bodies of those who annoy me with their ignorance. It's not a mac issue, it's not a PC issue, it's not a linux issue, it's not a goat issue, it's just a stupid user.

Sheesh. Tone down the elitism on all sides of the board, ok? People can be retards no matter what computer they use, regardless of the pros and cons of each OS. As far as I'm concerned, the only elitism we should be using here is Us Vs the Users, because no matter what you support you run into retards that give you a reason to come to [livejournal.com profile] techsupport and bitch about it with other people who know what it's like to do the job.

Ok, last entry deleted. You guys are pissing me off with that. I'm sorry I appeared to make it a mac issue when it was just some retard who managed to drool on a keyboard and get on the phone to me. Go beat your pro/anti drums somewhere else, please.

Oddly enough, I read the post for what it was, a rant about users that because they don't reboot that often don't know how to do so. I didn't notice anything along the lines of "Use Macs! Macs rule! Windows sucks! Linux sucks! You suck!" in the post, just a rant about clueless users.

So what happened? Did someone reply with "Hey Macs suck use Windows" or something daft like that?

(for reference, I use Win2k/XP (and I'm staying with that). I have tried Linux. I'm looking at MacOSX with the thoughts "If I jump ship to Linux, I'll get a Mac".)

I chimed in with a story of a mac user who was particularly arrogant, to the point of wanting to argue with me after I'd already solved her problem. Basically I was agreeing with the vein of the post - users suck. Someone else thought I was making an anti-mac argument and I think it got worse from there.

Macs, PCs, whatever. Idiots shit me. Arrogant idiots shit me more.

I hate OS evangelists. Even worse, they appear in person or over the 'net so you can't switch the channel...

I hate it more when people misinterpret what you say so that they can get all huffy. Sure, flame me, but do it for something I'm actually saying..

Well, since MacOSX is basically a variant of Linux, and has the added bonus of having plenty of good programs preinstalled and also Just Working with the hardware, it looks like the ideal Linux-lookalike for someone who doesn't want to have to fight Xwindows and drivers.

yeesh... I'm sorry about this. But I can't let you go on thinking these things.

OS X is not a variant of linux. OS X uses the Mach kernel and Darwin, which is one of the flavors of BSD (http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/unix/). That is the foundation and is completely open source. From there the Aqua GUI (http://www.apple.com/macosx/overview/aquauserinterface.html) runs on top of that, which gives the slick user interface and ease of use, which is a proprietary system (http://developer.apple.com/macosx/architecture/index.html). BSD is UNIX. linux is a bastardized knock off of BSD (I like linux, really, please don't flame) and completely open source. Linus has said so himself. So to say MacOSX is a variant of linux is painful for me to hear. If that were true, OS X would be open source, and we would have had OS X ported to intel PCs 4 years ago.

OK, with that stated... Yes there are many similarities between OS X and linux. the Bash shell being one of them. All your bash scripts should work flawlessly on either system. Yes you can port open source UNIX apps to linux and OS X. Both have similar file systems, and yes both can run on PPC architecture. But driver support, ease of use, and commercial applications is where the two differ greatly. Mostly linux is for the geek who wants to get down and dirty with the OS and Mac is for "the rest of us" that wants something that we can say "it just works".

Right, what I meant is that MacOSX and Linux are similar in temrs of design from a users point of view (same shell commands, same filesystem layout). I didn't mean to imply that MacOSX was based on Linux. My bad.

Basically, if I ever get fed up with Windows and decide to wipe it and install something else, I'm most likely to go for a Mac as, like you said, it just works.

Oh, boy. Another one. I had a mucho fun time reading that post. Almost makes me wish I was reading it from my desktop instead of the hiptop.

::pops another bag of popcorn::

My background: all OSs suck. *niux sucks. WIndows sucks. MacOS sucks. BeOS sucks. OS/2 sucks. AmigaOS sucks.

The only one I've never used in that list above is BeOS, which is why it sucks. It never lasted long enough for me to end up having top support it.

Please continue with the Windows/MacOS holy war. I need the entertainment, and the popcorn is ready to go.

Sometimes you can't even make a damn spelling error in this community without someone bringing it up. I like the way the_paco said it. "The only elitism we should be using here is Us Vs the Users."

So true! I like to use this community to be venting on my customers...not being vented on...

Those are usually fun because it is usually the loser customers that are posting here...even though the policy is spelled out on the main page...

Except when it isn't a loser customer and people are harassed to the point of leaving the community. Us Vs User indeed.

Yeah, it's a shame when that happens. Certainly I think this is probably the best place for techies to get help from other techies with those really hard problems.

Hmm, that's funny. I remember this warning at the very beginning.

IF YOU ARE NOT A TECH REP AND YOU ASK A QUESTION IN THE COMMUNITY FOR HELP WITH YOUR COMPUTER, YOU CANNOT HOLD THE COMMUNITY OR ANY OF IT'S MEMBERS RESPONSIBLE FOR WHAT HAPPENS TO YOUR COMPUTER. THIS IS NOT AN ESTABLISHED TECH SUPPORT HELP COMMUNITY. THIS IS FOR THE TECH REPS TO VENT AND LAUGH AND COMISERATE. SO TAKE ANY SUGGESTIONS FOR THINGS TO DO WITH YOUR COMPUTER, WITH THE KNOWLEDGE THAT WE HAVE DISCLAIMED THIS!!!

I love macs

I love PCs

I love my slackware

I run all three.

The only problem is, arseholes abound on all three fronts.

Dammit, where's that Bitchslap over IP protocol when you need it!

*BOIP!*
