Jun. 19th, 2005 01:43 pmIt wasn't about which OS was better people. It was about the users who call TECH SUPPORT and are RETARDED, whom I want to push onto electric fences because I'm a meanspirited person who wants to run an uncomfortable number of amperes through the bodies of those who annoy me with their ignorance. It's not a mac issue, it's not a PC issue, it's not a linux issue, it's not a goat issue, it's just a stupid user.
Sheesh. Tone down the elitism on all sides of the board, ok? People can be retards no matter what computer they use, regardless of the pros and cons of each OS. As far as I'm concerned, the only elitism we should be using here is Us Vs the Users, because no matter what you support you run into retards that give you a reason to come to
techsupport and bitch about it with other people who know what it's like to do the job.
Ok, last entry deleted. You guys are pissing me off with that. I'm sorry I appeared to make it a mac issue when it was just some retard who managed to drool on a keyboard and get on the phone to me. Go beat your pro/anti drums somewhere else, please.

Date: 2005-06-19 07:17 pm (UTC)So what happened? Did someone reply with "Hey Macs suck use Windows" or something daft like that?
(for reference, I use Win2k/XP (and I'm staying with that). I have tried Linux. I'm looking at MacOSX with the thoughts "If I jump ship to Linux, I'll get a Mac".)

Date: 2005-06-19 08:25 pm (UTC)::pops another bag of popcorn::
My background: all OSs suck. *niux sucks. WIndows sucks. MacOS sucks. BeOS sucks. OS/2 sucks. AmigaOS sucks.
The only one I've never used in that list above is BeOS, which is why it sucks. It never lasted long enough for me to end up having top support it.
Please continue with the Windows/MacOS holy war. I need the entertainment, and the popcorn is ready to go.

Date: 2005-06-21 12:22 pm (UTC)OS X is not a variant of linux. OS X uses the Mach kernel and Darwin, which is one of the flavors of BSD (http://www.apple.com/macosx/features/unix/). That is the foundation and is completely open source. From there the Aqua GUI (http://www.apple.com/macosx/overview/aquauserinterface.html) runs on top of that, which gives the slick user interface and ease of use, which is a proprietary system (http://developer.apple.com/macosx/architecture/index.html). BSD is UNIX. linux is a bastardized knock off of BSD (I like linux, really, please don't flame) and completely open source. Linus has said so himself. So to say MacOSX is a variant of linux is painful for me to hear. If that were true, OS X would be open source, and we would have had OS X ported to intel PCs 4 years ago.
OK, with that stated... Yes there are many similarities between OS X and linux. the Bash shell being one of them. All your bash scripts should work flawlessly on either system. Yes you can port open source UNIX apps to linux and OS X. Both have similar file systems, and yes both can run on PPC architecture. But driver support, ease of use, and commercial applications is where the two differ greatly. Mostly linux is for the geek who wants to get down and dirty with the OS and Mac is for "the rest of us" that wants something that we can say "it just works".

Date: 2005-06-21 12:33 pm (UTC)Basically, if I ever get fed up with Windows and decide to wipe it and install something else, I'm most likely to go for a Mac as, like you said, it just works.
