Had a thought today... When a computer running Windows XP starts up, and the login screen appears, you must choose a username and then enter the password. Is there a key combination that would allow you to input a different user name? To use the Guest or Administrator account, for example, as opposed to the other users created for the computer by the computer user/administrator.

If the guest or admin user haven't been disabled, their user will show on the login screen as one of the ones you can click to login as.

The Administrator account does not show up on the login screen even when enabled. It is the only account which behaves in this fashion.

admin accounts, as in all the accounts that are designated with full computer admin. control, including the original admin account which was renamed..

If you double check, I'm sure you'll see that the built in account, whether or not it is renamed, will not display on the Welcome screen.

There is a bug in XP Home (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb%3Ben-us%3B327918) that will cause the account to display under a very specific set of circumstances; those being when the computer's name is 'administrator' and Msgina.dll cannot perform the appropriate lookup in order to exclude the account from display. It may even be possible for the account to be renamed to whatever the name of the computer is, causing the same problem, but as I do not have XP Home, I cannot test this hypothesis.

Addendum: In XP Professional, at least, the computer will simply not let you rename the built in Administrator account to the same string as the name of the computer. Microsofts data storage mechanisms amuse me. ;-)

Press CTRL+ALT+DEL twice... should bring up the old fashioned login.

Correct! It's amazing how many people will jump in with a wrong (or irrelevant) answer. Sheesh.

no, and no.

Control panel > User Accounts > Change the way users log on and off > uncheck both boxes.

ok slick...

let's just call it a 'suggestion' rather than an 'answer'.

happy?

And it is a very reasonable suggestion if one is running in a business environment. But I've found that in my small 2 computer home network environment security is not really a concern, and Fast User Switching is very useful. A la: "Hey, let me check my email real quick... *switch* *check* *switch back*"

True enough, I guess it works, I personally prefer using "Run As..." ( or the console version ) to run as a different user, but that is just me.

Aha! I knew i wasn't crazy. I definitely have the admin account appearing on my login screen. I checked with the other sysadmin who actually installed it on my machine, and it's there specifically b/c he performed the registry tweak to make it so as documented by microsoft...

specifically...here's an example of how it is done...

Show Administrator on the Welcome Screen (Windows XP Professional)

Open your registry and find or create the key below.

Create a new DWORD value, or modify the existing value, called "Administrator" and set it according to the value data below.

Key: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\
SpecialAccounts\UserList]
Value Name: Administrator
Data Type: REG_DWORD (DWORD Value)
Value Data: (1 = show Administrator)

So, I'm not crazy. ;p

Oh oh oh!!! Neat. Can one remove users from the list as well? I wanted to make a security account usable only for running games but not allow a console login. Unfortunately in order to Run as a user that user also has to have console login privledges and thus appears on the Welcome screen...

And in answer to my own question...

YES! It does work. Excellent, that will prove most useful.
