I like it when IT people call in. I like it when we find out after 20 mins of ts'ing a seperate slow throughput issue that their original problem was caused by a craptastic self-crimped ethernet cable. I like it when, after doing everything meticulously I send them away with the proper answer.

But sometimes I just really wish I could type "OMGWTF P4C0 0WNZ0R J00 N00B B1Z|\|4TC|-| L0LL3RC0PT3R!!!!!!11111!!!ONE!" in my remedy notes.

Dare you question ME, user? DARE YOU!?

Hehehehe
Time to go home.

I can't guarentee that the cables *I* make will do Gig-e, but they'll certainly do 100base without too much hassle.

As far as spec, According to the draft Cat6 spec sheet I saw in 2001, a feild tech can't make a patch cable in the field.

'course, I could be waay off by now. But show me a "typical" office needing Cat6 tested and certified wiring, and NOT be a image or video editing studio.

Geeking...

I agree with you on the typical office.
Realistically if they have that amount of data moving between computers, some intelligent networking could remove most bottlenecks not being caused by the hardware (slow spindle speed hard drives, etc).

The only places I generally think to myself "Here's a good place for a gigabit network" is someplace that is a defacto part of a backbone and/or connected to an important server.

That's bad. Not so much at the moment, but give it five years. Everyone will be running Cat6 whether they need it or not, and then one cable somewhere will die and need an emergency stand-in. But wait! All the fresh-faced new techs have no cabling ability!

This is when they will unlock our cells and wheel us out to perform miracles once again :)
