F*CK!!!!!!!
Dec. 22nd, 2002 12:59 amI'm about to kill myself over this.
I don't know what the dumbest of all things that I've done is. Maybe it's trusting Glenn to save me the best optical mouse at Staples. Maybe it's buying it before checking out the reviews. Maybe it's checking out the damned reviews.
I'm stressed out beyond belief.
Someone, help me.. or at least point me in the direction where there could be someone that could help me.
See, my boyfriend asked for a mouse. An optical computer mouse. He specifically asked for something that isn't cordless, but .. well, I asked my friend who works at Staples to save me their best mouse, and it turned out to be cordless. It was the "Wireless Optical Mouse blue" by Microsoft, so I blindly bought it. When I brought it home, my dad got all excited and said that he's been looking for it all over and is terribly jealous of Eric. Well, that's nice, except I went online and started looking at the reviews. Fuck me for being curious. Half the people loved it. Half the people hated the shit out of it and said it was bad for gaming because of how it wasn't precise enough. ..Most praised their Logitech computer mice and made me want to rip my hair out.
I asked a couple of my friends, and all they told me was that they trust Microsoft over anything because of the mice that THEY have: optical. But not wireless. No one I know has had any experience with this damned thing, and I no longer know if I should trust a single soul out there.
I asked Glenn what the fuck he was thinking, and he proceeded to tell me that he owns the Logitech wireless optical mouse, how he worships it, and how he can't comprehend how the same mouse by a different maker can be any worse. That's all nice, except that I don't see him ever having used "blue" and probably never will.
..
Help me, please. I'm lost beyond belief. I know NOTHING about electronics, but wanting to buy the best of the best just isn't working out these days.
..Thanks for reading.

Date: 2002-12-21 10:13 pm (UTC)Logitech mice have more game issues than Microsoft's does. Your choice was a good one, I envy Eric too dammit.
Those mice are extremely sexy, and they work very well.

Date: 2002-12-22 01:28 am (UTC)1) Cordless mice tend to be more inprecise than corded ones (skippy). Does this make a difference to him? Is he going to need precision mouse control (games, fine clicking, graphic software) or just cruise around the desktop/applications?
2) Microsoft... from person experinence, I don't have too too much trouble with their keyboard/mice, but at times their drivers can be bigger and more bloated then other products. Generally this isn't a big deal; but it can mean slowdown in games and etc, just because of the way it is. On the other hand, this usually means you get a ton of options; such as nice controls on resolution/responsiveness and pointer speed.
3) Cordless is just like a TV remote. Things *can* interefere with it; although unless someone is purposely pointing IR devices at it, this probably won't happen. Also there needs to be a clear line of sight between the mouse and the reciever. The mouse is sending a laser beam of data to the IR reciever and if there's something in the way; you can't play so good.
4) Finally it uses batteries. With all the pros and cons that come with anything that uses batteries.
So is it all worth it? Tough to say; really you won't know until it's plugged in, sitting in front of you while you and your boyfriend decide if it's comfortable to use or not. Be sure to adjust the configuration options and maybe try different positioning on the desk if it's not working well first-try... but in the end it's usage that will decide if it works or not. And if it doesn't? Well, Staples has a good return/exchange policy. "Too choppy" is a valid reason.

*I also use the words 'cordless' and 'wireless' interchangably... don't mind me.

Date: 2002-12-22 05:26 am (UTC)If I've been a dunce and it's all RF rather than IR then I'm sorry... I should have suspected though, what with all these 1.2Ghz fancy cordless phones and etc.
Re:
Date: 2002-12-22 06:29 am (UTC)The battery thing wasn't a problem, I was going to buy him a charger, too.
Thanks!

Date: 2002-12-23 05:46 am (UTC)BTW, since you mentioned he's a gamer, look for a corded optical mouse with a wheel. Most games have wheel support these days, and the extra functionality can be massively helpful in some games.
