OK I need some geek help here. I'm at a loss. I'm running 98se and have IE 6.0 Sp1 installed. About a week ago, the browser stopped opening additional windows either from popups or doing a right-click, open in new browser. I've tried running a windows update and getting the latest security updates, etc, restored the defaults, but have had no luck. Short of uninstalling it and reinstalling, I've tried everything I can think of. Anybody have any suggestions?

Try clearing the cache and cookies? I've seen it fix a lot of issues...

...if that doesn't work, I'd try the uninstall and reinstall... unless someone else suggests something better... then, "yah, what they said."

before you reformat anything or reinstall anything, try repairing it. go to control panel -> add/remove -> find microsoft IE.. click on add remove -> it'll give you an option to repair it. let that do its thing, restart and see if it works.

seems to fix things on my calls a lot. ;)

Several things that you can try:

  1. Go into Internet Options and click on the Programs tab. Click on the [Reset Web Settings] button. It will pop up another box in which you will want to uncheck "Also reset my homepage". And then click [Yes].
  2. Also in the Internet Options, click on the Advanced tab and click on the [Restore Defaults] button.
  3. In Add/Remove Programs you can look for MS Internet Explorer, click on it and hit [Add/Remove] which will pop up several options, one of which being, "Repair". Select "Repair" and hit [OK]. It will tell you what it is going to do, you hit [Yes] and let it reboot. (I think you mentioned that you already tried this.)

Sounds like special software a coworker downloaded so he could look up porn with out the millions of pop up windows. End result couldn't open any new window in IE.

Deinstall 3rd party software that prevents ad pop up windows.

the solution

have you tried the regedit for now browse!

I'm a T2 for a national ISP. Recently I had a rare case in which only a single window would open and then no browse... I unistalled comms then did a winsock and winsock2 regedit... deleting winsock and winsock2...are you familiar at all with this fix.
