Has anyone else noticed the ridiculous amount of people who end up with their network card disabled after installing XP SP2? Not to mention how XP lets them know that their (non existant) LAN has limited or no connectivity? *glares at microsoft*

huh? How does this happen?

I've yet to see this behavior on anything that I've tossed SP2 on.

This behavior is by design.

It's how we make it secure!

Eh? I've not seen that on any of the many machines I've installed it on. I must just be really lucky...not had an issue with any of them yet :)

I think it's a security measure, but it's a damned half-assed way of going about it! I installed SP2 on three XP machines here, two of them locked out the LAN connection (didn't disable the nic, just the network protocols) and one of them was fine. o.O Buggered if I can work out what caused it - one machine was upgraded to XP from win98 (because I love my HAL)and locked out, and the other two were straight XP installs.

Okay, the NIC disabling I'm seeing a lot of, and I was wondering what was going on. But what exactly is the Network Protocols being disabled (I mean I'm aware of what they are and what not, but I was wondering what you meant by disabled)? I'm wondering if that's been something I've been missing or if I just refer to it a different way, or if for us it's not a big deal as the network protocols need to be set to automatic anyway.

it was mostly that the services were being shafted by the firewall - the IP and subnet (I run a fixed IP network) were there and valid, but the services were actually being killed by the firewall. Fucked that off first thing. If i had the nic set to DHCP client, it wasn't listening for a broadcaster. Bi-zarre.

Then again, it's documented that SP2 screws up people's dialup connection speed too - we've had customers that connect at 49, install SP2, drop to 33. Remove SP2, back up to a connection speed of 49kps. Even microsoft don't even know wtf is causing it...

Apart from n00bs getting their machines hijacke,d nup :P

we noticed the SP2 conn speed dropping a couple months ago, googled it, and found out that it's common...kinda. it seems sporadic. Personally i didn't notice it happen when I installed, but as I've said before, I'm running it upgraded from win98SE....

hmm.

Removing SP2. HAHA. That's funny.

I haven't had any problems on any of the machines I've installed SP2 on, but I've heard all kinds of shit. I was wondering if it was just talk without substance. I guess not though, seeing everyone's comments.

Even more are the frequent BSOD's that result in backbreaking labor rebuilding the OS afterwards due to people with both spyware AND automatic updates on.

Didn't Microsoft

I know this is not a MS-bashing forum, but this is the reason I switched to all MAC OSX at home. I've been supporting this half-ass OS Windows for 15 years and just tired of all the extra work which is required to keep it safe, stable and online.

I do video editing, and thats what made me first look towards the OSX side, but the stability and ease of use (although higher hardware cost) is just so much nicer. Knowing I dont have to patch anything home except my linux server is so comforting after baby-sitting the Winboxes here at work with spyware, popups and a new security patch every 10 days.

:-)
*Rant off*

from what I've heard

It only causes problems on machines running illigitimate versions of XP. It works fine on my 3 computers.
