Sep. 23rd, 2004 03:40 pmSome support guys really think about their users.
I'm on front-end support for Computer Science at the local University; receiving and answering emails, and passing on anything I don't have a clue about to the real techies. Also involves a bit of setting up new PCs, and generally trying to avoid leaving my desk.
Today they (those in Support who actually know stuff) are changing the student server, which does practically everything for the students, to some nice new hardware. Now, you think they'd tell 'em that we're doing it, right?
Wrong. True, term hasn't started, and true, all the Masters guys have just left. But that doesn't mean students aren't gonna want to read their emails, or access some of the stuff on the website that you have to log in to. Where are the password files? Yep...
So I'm sat here getting the brunt of it. From students. ArghArghArgh.

Date: 2004-09-23 10:20 am (UTC)I'm an undergrad at, I believe, the same university, and I've had a couple of paniced IMs and phone calls from friends asking me what the hell has happened to their files, and why can't they look up what books they need for next term.
I can only feel what you're going though. My sympathies...

Date: 2004-09-23 01:29 pm (UTC)I personally try to avoid annoying the hell out of support too much... I can't speak for the rest of my fellow students, though.
I've got more sense than to anger the people who have access to my email and the disk my work is stored on...

Date: 2004-09-23 02:07 pm (UTC)I never bothered support in my undergrad years. I can imagine a few in my year that did. I think I'll more be showing up the incompetence of the lecturers, that's the most amusing...
