Jul. 21st, 2004 01:39 pmOk I'm paging through CPU (Computer Power User) magazine (Not a bad read) and notice an ad for the new AMD Athlon 64 FX.
It shows a guy sitting in front of a computer looking very very serious.

Now I have a tendency to pick apart ads on occasion. So I notice that he has a command prompt window open on Windows XP. It looks like he was doing a lot of work on the command line. So the thought crosses my mind "What would someone even do on the command line for Windows XP? I only do very basic stuff at a Windows command prompt because everything else has a nice graphical interface that I've grown used to . . ." So I look closer.
Apparantly the guy in this ad is a big idiot or his kid was messing with his PC because this is what the screen reads if you look close:
C:\ fa
'fa' is not recognized blah blah blah
C:\
C:\
C:\
C:\asdf
'asdf' is not recognized blah blah blah
C:\df
'df' is not recognized blah blah blah

It's always fun to find stuff like that. I'll bet AMD's advertising staff must not have realized it would be that clear.
Anyway on another note, how are AMD's latest offerings? I have an Athlon 700 that I'm thinking about replacing in the coming months and I've been pretty happy with it overall. My only complaint is it'll heat up a room like crazy. Do they still do that?

Date: 2004-07-21 11:54 am (UTC)That's not really hot for an AXP
Date: 2004-07-21 07:38 pm (UTC)My 2500+ @ 3200+ runs 56-62 C on die. Apparently, that's normal, maybe even cool. I see OEM-built AMD boxes running 65 C idle.
I do have a big copper Cooler Master on it, but pushing it from 1.8 to 2.2 GHz didn't raise the temp by more than 5 C at full load.
Apparently every 2500+ can overclock this well. I heard a rumor that the 2500+ bartons were all just surplus 3200+ chips that AMD marked "333 MHz FSB."
Maybe it's true.

Date: 2004-07-21 12:22 pm (UTC)Also, the new Athlons rock my house. I have a "Barton" 2500+ that absolutely rocks. It's amazingly fast, and doesn't seem to do the "space heater" thing that my old Thunderbird 750 did. Granted, I have one of the shiny Thermaltake Xaser cases that may help - but it doesn't seem to put out the heat the old ones did.
Definitely would recommend an upgrade.

Date: 2004-07-21 08:24 pm (UTC)Did you run the chip without that? Did it throw off a lot of heat then but not anymore with this installed on it?
