Ok I'm paging through CPU (Computer Power User) magazine (Not a bad read) and notice an ad for the new AMD Athlon 64 FX.

It shows a guy sitting in front of a computer looking very very serious.

Now I have a tendency to pick apart ads on occasion. So I notice that he has a command prompt window open on Windows XP. It looks like he was doing a lot of work on the command line. So the thought crosses my mind "What would someone even do on the command line for Windows XP? I only do very basic stuff at a Windows command prompt because everything else has a nice graphical interface that I've grown used to . . ." So I look closer.

Apparantly the guy in this ad is a big idiot or his kid was messing with his PC because this is what the screen reads if you look close:

C:\ fa
'fa' is not recognized blah blah blah
C:\
C:\
C:\
C:\asdf
'asdf' is not recognized blah blah blah

C:\df
'df' is not recognized blah blah blah

It's always fun to find stuff like that. I'll bet AMD's advertising staff must not have realized it would be that clear.

Anyway on another note, how are AMD's latest offerings? I have an Athlon 700 that I'm thinking about replacing in the coming months and I've been pretty happy with it overall. My only complaint is it'll heat up a room like crazy. Do they still do that?

I run an Athlon 1800+XP on a Soyo board, and yes, it's hot. Not unreasonably so; I run a Zalman AlCu heat sink with fan on it with no trouble... usual core temps are in the 39-43C range.

All of them, hot as hell, but cheap and fast. Very much like the types of women I simply adore.

Hahahah teh winnar.

Also, the new Athlons rock my house. I have a "Barton" 2500+ that absolutely rocks. It's amazingly fast, and doesn't seem to do the "space heater" thing that my old Thunderbird 750 did. Granted, I have one of the shiny Thermaltake Xaser cases that may help - but it doesn't seem to put out the heat the old ones did.

Definitely would recommend an upgrade.

I've got a 2800+ Barton, cooled by a Koolance EXOS... Its quite, and doesn't heat the room at all.

Shhhh! I've not seen much of season 3 yet! The final episode airs over here tomorrow, but we've missed so many episodes we're waiting for the DVD box set, which is out in a couple of weeks :)

Currently, my media server is an AthlonXP 2000+, my fileserver (1.2TB raid array, woo!) is a 2400+, and my main desktop is an Athlon64 3200+. All 3 rock.

(I have nothing against Intel chips, but they're WAY too expensive for desktop systems when compared to a comparable AMD.)

While we're whipping them all out...

I have a Celeron 733mhz.

I win. ;-p

MY CHIP IS THE BIGGEST(or at least my balls are for claiming that...)

That's not really hot for an AXP

You must be looking at the socket sensor temps, not the on-die temps.

My 2500+ @ 3200+ runs 56-62 C on die. Apparently, that's normal, maybe even cool. I see OEM-built AMD boxes running 65 C idle.

I do have a big copper Cooler Master on it, but pushing it from 1.8 to 2.2 GHz didn't raise the temp by more than 5 C at full load.

Apparently every 2500+ can overclock this well. I heard a rumor that the 2500+ bartons were all just surplus 3200+ chips that AMD marked "333 MHz FSB."

Maybe it's true.

Dude, see my above post about running that 2500+ at 400 FSB to get a 3200+.

They all will do it. Really.

I had an 1800+ before this that I ran with air cooling. Yes, it was a freaking space heater. I know this one technically puts out more heat, but with the water cooling I guess its doing it more efficiently so it doesn't heat the room at all. And its sooooo quiet.

Or it could be that I don't pay attention when I'm typing. +10 on those temps. Idle temp (according MBM5) is usually in the mid-high 40s (46-49, depending on ambient temp), working load (several hours of gaming) is 54-56.
