One of the lusers just forwarded the HELP DESK a 3mb wmv entitled "Babies and Fathers," which appears to be a collage of men changing diapers and their *hilarious* reactions, including funny faces and gagging to the point of vomiting. She was, of course, sent the automated reply, "Hello [clueless lady], Thank you for contacting [tech dept.]. Your request has been logged as Interaction ID 25694. Please use this Interaction ID as reference in all future communications on this issue. A staff person will respond to you soon."

Why? Just.. why would she send me such a thing? Don't worry, though. A staff person will get right on it...

Sigh.

Edit: Might as well be safe and take out names.

OK - this is either the dorkiest email or the coolest email I have ever received since I have been here. Enjoy:

Do you have any special option settings to do this really tricky task??:
I have some floppys from my Dad's old Atari 520ST and I am trying to read them. As far as I know they were double density but only single sided (360K disks).
Any ideas short of buying an old Atari on Ebay?

Do I help this guy without asking why he wants to do this? LOL

I've been working application support/DBA-guy for this company for about a month now. It's a small shop that provides tech support for another company's big-ass software suite. I've spent most of my career as a Windows Server Guy (MCSE, MCDBA, MC Chis kicks butt, etc) and have discovered that I know far, far, FAR more about windows networking et al than anyone else in the company. We don't have an IT department. Problems just "get fixed" by whoever is around. No one here knows how our network is configured. There is no documentation. Our "server room" is a joke. Today, after I spotted, diagnosed, and repaired YET ANOTHER severe error on our core servers, I asked the seniormost guy here:

"So, who exactly _is_ our System Administrator, anyways? One of the VPs?"

"Uh... You. Pretty much. You are, now."

"Oh....Huh....Guess it's a good thing I scammed myself some domain admin privs, then, huh?"

"Uh...yeah."

I feel like... Hercules on American Gladiators.

Flame on!

I made a post here yesterday morning about some problems I'd had with locating the drivers for my graphics card. I'd solved the problem by the time I posted, and posted to vent my frustrations as we all do. That's why the community is here after all. I've now deleted the post after a series of incredibly patronising responses by various people. One person seemed intent on calling me an idiot, a number of people told me where I could find the drivers I'd already tried that didn't work - even after I'd edited the post to say this. And finally there was the guy who posted

"What I do not understand, is why are YOU trying to fix a Company owned machine. Let IT fix it, due to that is what they are paid to do. Unless you are trying to hide the true reason that you are using this machine for, and do not want them to find out."

I'd already deleted the post by the time I read this comment, but I need to respond to it. The reason I was repairing the PC, you patronising bastard, is that IT IS MY JOB - rather like everyone else here. You only have to look at my previous posts here, or my userinfo in order to deduce that.

I've always found this to be a fun community, and I've often posted here to vent my frustrations. I don't know if there was something in the air yesterday, but I really feel that a couple of you (particularly this last guy, who I won't name) were overly harsh. I'll certainly think twice before posting here again.

Comments disabled because I'm really not up to a repeat performance.
