Got a hard drive on the bench. Hanging out the side of this very workstation. 40 GB IBM DeathStar. Couple of years old at most.

*ka-chunk-CLUNK*... Oh, it's saying hello. Well, good evening, you unreliable piece of shit. Bearings, servo, electronics, everything is half dead on this thing. I can actually hear the speed of the whiny spindle motor fluctuating. That can't be good.

It's been tapped, shaken, de-boarded, blown, sucked, re-boarded, put in the fridge for a bit and dropped 6 inches onto a static mat. W00t, I can finally mount it... at least for 10 minutes or so, then it mysteriously vanishes and needs to be power cycled (and occasionally whacked) repeatedly

Sometimes I think I go waaaay too far for the lusers.

Update: It finally decided to stay up for an hour or so. I actually got the data off that thing.
