My mother spent over three hours copying stuff from a number of websites for research material, but hadn't realised she needs to paste this stuff into a word document (or similar), courtesy of my sister not telling her this vital bit of information.
I've told her that she can't copy into oblivion, apparently this could have been of assistance about four hours ago when she started copying.
Hence I believe my family, let alone most of the world, should not be using computers or the internet.

I, like most people, learned through trial and error. My 73 year old mother had a web site up before she passed. She made a lot of mistakes before she figured it out. I am sure you have benefitted from knowledge passed on to you by others.
Who the hell are you to declare that people you don't think are smart enough should not have access to computers or the Internet?
It's that kind of elitist attitude that really makes computer savvy people come accross as self rightous assholes.
Give your mother a break. She taught you how to poop in a potty so you wouldn't soil you diapers anymore. Maybe you could show a bit more patience with her as she tries to figure out the computer.

Date: 2004-05-17 08:28 pm (UTC)I'm perfectly willing to share knowledge with someone who wants to learn. I'm not going to hold someone's hand every time they need to print a file.
Would your mother still hold your hand when you poop if you hadn't gotten it yet? Think she might be a little sick of it?

Date: 2004-05-17 08:49 pm (UTC)And to answer your question. Yes, I have done a LOT of support. I have been front line support, I currently manage a help desk, I host my own computer phone in show and I write the Help Line for the Houston Chronicle.
You know, nobody makes you work support. If you don't want to help people maybe you should get out of the biz...
I just think that computer people with an elitest attitude are useless. That's all. If you have knowledge, share it. If you don't want to share it, fine. Quit your support job and do something you like.
I have met many people in support who are not that bright themselves. They cling to their limited tech knowledge and prop themselves up as being such elite shit and trashing the people who provide the revenue that allow their company to pay them.
Granted, some tech stories are hillarious. But you gotta keep it real.

try looking at the task bar.
the what?
the bar at the bottom with the open programs. *points specifically*),
I became quite frustrated (understandably). She is technologically inept, and knows this. She's barely mastered the art of left and right mouse button clicking, and booting and shutting down Dad's soon-to-be-redundant PIII-600.
Thankfully, a few hours later, my sister came home and completed the research for herself.

Date: 2004-05-19 04:45 pm (UTC)Just to reiterate for those who haven't taken the time to read it, I quote from the info page:
" About: For Technical Support Reps to say everything you always wanted to say to a customer, without losing your job. "
This forum is a wonderful place for us to commiserate with others about the stupidity we encounter on a regular basis. And, yes, I am an elitist.
I have spent the last 14 years in the computer field. Most of it was training and supporting endusers. Some of them now know more than I do about computers, some of them are happy with the limited knowledge I imparted, and some will be clueless til the day they die. And I will mock those clueless lusers here, in the warm fuzzy place someone was kind enough to set up for it, for those other kindred souls around the world who not only sympathize, but empathize with my pain.

Date: 2004-05-20 09:08 am (UTC)We're going to keep being elitist snobs.
mrkamikaze can keep hating us for it.
it's fine. dandy. over with. let's keep the flame wars to a minimum.
*and by kids, i did _not_ mean to imply that i'm older/smarter/more experienced/better/etc/blah/ad nauseum than either of you. so drop the LJ flamethrowers and go back to posting irritating end-user stories. and stop that, I see you trying to get the last word.
copy!

Date: 2004-05-18 11:33 pm (UTC)Even if I didn't have a clue about computers, I'd still be a snob. That's just the ego I have.
I agree, most of the world shouldn't be using computers. But I'm not going sob that they keep do. Keeps me in work. As long as ditzes keep using computers, I can keep fixing them.
And seriously, if someone is sickened by an elitist attitude by a bunch of overly-computer-literate off-duty help-desk support-techies, they are _seriously_ in the wrong community. His fingers are going to fall off from typing snide flame wars on every single post with an "elitist attitude" in this community.
Hell that's the whole reason I keep coming back. The elitist attitude.
PLZ DO NOT EVER LOSE ELITIST ATTITUDE KTHX >=D
