Or at least directions please.

So me in my infinite wisdom (yes start laughing now) thought I would be so cool as to reload the main house computer. Tried the "recovery disk" that was sent with the computer and it could format but not recover fully. So I thought I'd try the XP, all worked but modem drivers. So I reformatted the pc again and then just ran a recovery no problemo. Except this one HUGE one.

Windows 98 Second edition, no product key. Wait I just got a brain, nope damn. Ok I thought I'd snag a product key off this machine but it will not take. Then I see this keyboard helper, click that and this is the list of letters and numbers I suppose I can use on this machine.

So does anyone have a win98 2nd edition product key that may work with this? or I have heard lately you can find them on the web.

Much appreciated if you can help. Gawd, take away my techie card now. I should have written this down the first time. I could have sworn I had it.

if there is no pink M$ sticker w/ a valid PID you might want to contact the vendor of the PC. Or better yet go with XP and get drivers that work or a modem that isn't shit. Asking people on-line for product is really sketchy and probably not advisable.

I'd be looking for the modem drivers with whatever machine you posted this with and just go with XP if it's a [GAK!] winmodem.

look for certificate of authenticity somewhere with manuals/books or on outside of case. if that fails and you go with xp hit the manufacturer site for your modem and grab drivers.

suggestion MS have good lawyers asking for product keys tends to get their attention. so geeks dont usually give that sort of thing out on a public forum.

GTFG

GTFG & search - you will find the keys you desire.

Is it sad...

I have an Win98SE OEM key flashed into my brain?
A couple of years back, I used it so much I'll never forget it.
It's the one I have burned onto all the OPK discs in the shop.

Phone the vendor. Even if your warranty is expired, so long as they can verify you're a customer and should have 98, they should give you a working key. Even *tiny* did that.

"phone the vendor"

Not a good idea, unless it's someone like Dell that has life-time phone support free.

Say it's a Hewlett Packard. That generic COA that takes 3 clicks to look up is going to cost you 40 bucks.

Just try googling "Generic COA windows 98" and see what comes up.
