The customer's computer keeps booting into safe mode whenever he has his cable modem plugged into his computer. The customer had sworn up and down that it was MY fault that his computer is going batty! Of course when anything goes wrong, and they get me it's always my fault.

Honestly though. What makes people think like this? I'm your ISP which means I give support on your internet connection... For example, when you are not able to connect to the Internet. Or when your email fails. But when your HP Windows ME Piece of shit boots up in safe mode... don't you think that you should call your OEM???

Of course you all know this... But God. They just seem to get worse these days... Fucking idiots.

hhmmm... I'd tell him to fuck off and call the ISP first because its their equipment and we only support the machine with the original HW/SW configuration. sucks to be that guy.

so...
if a customer ever installs any software (let alone hardware), then it is not HP's issue?

Was it XP or ME? If it was USB/(whatever os here) I can sede that happening. Fucking USB cable modem drivers are so buggy. 20% of all 98se/me usb installs fail because windows don't even see the drivers in the first place. I want to put a cork on every usb port on those darned modems.

Not that it makes any difference now, but the cable modems we use (Motorola Surfboards) have a USB driver conflict with the Pentium motherboards. AFAIK, the Motorola site has an updated driver that will stop the constant rebooting, but we haven't tested it yet, so all we can do is suggest they use a ethernet .

well

I would say that the user probably didn't understand the indians when he called them for HP support.....and since he could understand you with his ISP, he called you. I would have probably done the same if I were in his shoes.
However....if the issue did involve him installing something from the ISP, then yeah, you should help him fix it. But on the same token, if it wasn't something provided by the ISP for him to use, then yeah, give a suggestion for him to try and refer him to his technical support for what ever he is doing. Maybe even look up a phone number for him.
I agree with you, but we all know that user's dont read the manuals that come with their computers, and that's why manufacturers are putting the manuals on CD in pdf format so that they can save money on the paper product that they had been producing. The problem though is that most users have no idea that their manual is on a CD. They probably don't even care.

In theory if you did windows updates or downloaded e-mail you have violated the scope of support. Damn, I should just refort everyone that calls. I could do 50 calls a day.

I had a customer once who "could connect fine with his company x dialup connection, but he plugged the his computer into the router, it acted up"

Basically what he told me was that things would happen like he couldn't open Excel, or Control Panel, or a few other things while he had his computer connected into the router, and we had to fix it or he was cancelling.

..right, because all the software we made you put on your computer (zero) screwed something up.

I told him to have someone check it out and we wouldn't help him.

Oh, the joy of it all...

From the other side of the fence, I had someone insisting there's something wrong with their PCs because they can't get a connection. Thing was, they'd actually tried the PC on a modem line in the shop, and it worked fine. Took it home, nothing. Even after explaining that if it worked fine on another line - it was a dial-up-modem - it was something with their phone socket, they virtually had to be pushed off the phone (you know the thing.. 'okay, well give that a go.. good luck, bye now', everything short of hanging up) to get rid of them.

actually....

b) via chipsets
c) USB 1
d) USB 2
E) all of the above....

You just confirmed why I completely ignored the USB functionality on my cable modem and used Ethernet.

The card these nitwits might try to play is the old "But it was working just fine before I had this cable modem installed!" Of course, for all you know, working just fine could mean the weight of having every stupid adware-enabled shareware piece of shit program was just under the breaking point, until they did something else!

Just a theory :)

And plugging them in immediately constitutes as an improper useage of equipment and invalidates the warranty....

Got someone last week that insisted that the modem fried her monitor, and wanted us to buy her a new computer. Umm, no.

Oh lord! Who says tha intarweb isn't evil!?

A little off course, but I remember years ago, I worked in a fast food place, and I got a call from someone saying their burrito wasnt wrapped properly and it spilled, so he wanted "a new one". Of course, what he meant by new one was that he wanted a new burrito AND to replace the Armani suit he happened to wear. I basically told him that we'd replace the burrito, but as far as the suit, he could fuck off. :)

I ended up passing her on up to my boss. Boss ended up calling the tech who told her that the modem did it. The tech confirmed that yes, she was crazy, and he'd also tried to convince her it wasn't the modem, to no avail. She crumbled under the force of the truth! Bwahaha.

What, Walmart's going to give you money back for a paperback novel or lounge chair you bought at K-mart?

Why's HP gonna support the EasyCD Creator or CDRW drive you bought at Walmart?

Weirdly enough Win ME has been the most stable version of Win I've had on my computers. It also boots like a bat outta hell for me, even with a Linux dualboot. I kinda like it.
