I expected most of my posts here to be about stupid users, but today I had a run-in with a stupid helpdesk:

From: sw-fangirl
To: Helpdesk I Was Hoping Was Smart

Our contracting officer tried to go through your online access to view his statement today and received this error:

"The Adobe Acrobat/Reader that is running can not be used to view PDF files in a Web Browser. Adobe Acrobat/Reader version 8 or 9 is required. Please exit and try again."

His computer is running Adobe Reader 9.1, and Adobe Acrobat 8.1. We tried setting PDFs to open automatically with both programs; no luck. Tried rebooting the machine; no luck. What do we need to do to fix this?

Hello,
Please reboot the program and hopefully that will work. You are correct on the programs.

Srsly? *headdesk* Lucky their helpdesk is nowhere near where I'm located ....

I don't know about that company, but our corporate IT security had us disable opening of PDF files in the browser because of all the exploits that keep popping up. So anytime a user needs to view a PDF from the web, they have to download it first and open it with the stand alone reader.

Today borked?

Adobe just updated my Reader v8.1.3 so it's really possible they borked the 9.1 version...

Borked for me yesterday too, and I just updated to the latest security update. Quite possible it's Adobe.

Heh. Mine was a "only-downloadable-once" paid printout. That was annoying.
Luckily their tech support was a bit smarter.

Icon is stealable, credit is in my userinfo :)

Ah! You made the classical mistake of using more than one short sentence in an email!

And you know people only read the first or the last sentence of mails. Right?

(Seriously, this is a problem that has been irritating about everyone I know for a very long time.)

Last time it happened to me (some week ago), I mailed something like this:

To: some webmaster
From: Mirar
Subject: Please fix search by X

Hi! Me and others have a problem, we need to be able
to search your information by X. This should be easy
to implement, since it's already there in the database,
and you can search by similar fields.

Could searching by X be implemented?

You can't search by X.

But think of the happy people that finally get to someone who know what they're doing. ^^
