I work in a data center. I get a call from someone who monitors servers from off site.
"Yes, I was working on the server, and disabled the NIC. Somehow I lost connectivity to the server, can you fix it?" he inquired.
..."Do you understand how connectivity was lost when you TS into a machine and disable the network card." I asked.
"If you could investigate and find out how this happened and let us know, that would be great!" He exclaimed.

Same, but either as a 'service network restart', or was able to walk down to the server room and log into the server directly (though it did take a while to find it in the kvm).

I wrote a script to change the network address of a machine and then reboot it, and it didn't come up on the network address I wanted, in a hosted env.

I did test the script locally before trying it, failing and finally admitting to the tech that the NIC failure was my fault.

I've SMSed into a user's computer and then logged the user off, thereby disconnecting myself, however:

a) I did it on purpose

and

b) I was on the phone with the user and was just going to re-establish connection anyway.

I do something similar to myself on a regular basis. More specifically I keep a machine in my basement and log in from my kitchen. When I'm done with it I just tell it to shutdown, automatically closing my connection. Next time I want to use it I go back down there and turn it back on.

There was a senior tech guy - ex-mainframe, I think - who was one of the few people who physically worked onsite at the server centre inside all the security. Everyone in the IT department wanted to be on his good side, because he was the guy you rang when you'd screwed up badly and needed a server rebooted RIGHT NOW.
