"SHIFT AND CAPS LOCK KEYS NOT WORKING ON LAPTOP, The HT's laptop isn't working properly the shift and caps lock keys aren't working - Dell D620"
"Hi, are you near the laptop now? Can you tell me the Dell Service Tag Number? It's on the bottom of the laptop. Yeah, sure, turn it upside down and give it a good shake." Takes down Tag number. "It works now? ... Do you eat your lunch at your desk?"

Date: 2008-04-29 11:16 am (UTC)I've got a user like that - always catch hell trying to get the damned thing away from her for repairs b/c she's always "too busy" to part with it. Once I did, I shook enough crap loose to make a fracking Happy Meal.
I gently suggested that she leave the laptop behind at mealtime.

Date: 2008-04-29 06:00 pm (UTC)That's like a user who called me saying his laptop wouldn't turn on. I tried the usual stuff over the phone - check connections, is it docked correctly, plugged in, not in standby, swap battery, etc. Nothing. So I go to his desk and he's not there (probably made a quick escape 'fore I got there) but the laptop is. I do all that simple stuff again and then notice the laptop is sticky and smells like...coffee. I notice there is coffee splashed ALL over the wall. It was wiped up but was clearly a VAT of coffee that spilled in this dude's office. I'm like...um...yeah...I think I know why it's not turning on. Woulda been nice to know you dumped your Venti latte on the laptop, kthx. I take it downstairs, holding it sideways in my hand against my side like a book and by the time I get two floord down and one tower over, coffee has pooled in my cupped hand seeping from the innards of the laptop....
