This happened years ago when I worked for an ISP.

Your warranty does not cover intentional damage, no matter how frustrated you were. And no the tech did not make you take the modem swing it around your head by the ethernet cable and smash it into the wall. You were having a software issue and now you're having a self inflicted hardware issue. You will have to pay our highly inflated replacement cost for said modem as you chose to rent it rather then purchase one of your own. We will not be repairing the dent in your drywall either, and no we don't care what paper you will write to, but I'm sure they will be entertained by your story too.

Bonus points if you told him "See, this is why you can't have nice things".

At one small ISP I worked for I watched the owner of the company over-hand throw a decent sized printer at the Systems Administrator. He ducked and it smashed against the wall. The owner then screamed,"NOW FIX THAT TOO!"

...the owner was a little unstable...

"Um, sure, I'll fix it. right after I call the cops for assault.

By the way. I quit, here's my notice, and a notice of intent to sue for mental trauma for a couple months worth of salary whilst I find a new job after my vacation."

That it, unless I was armed, in which case the boss would have something black and rather unpleasant pointing at him while I said the same thing...

Heh, I would have paid to see that. Of course, I do live in the real world where had you pulled your gun there would have been a shoot out right there. This company was about 8 people large and everyone knew the owner packed. I would have also paid to see you attempt to sue a $12 a hour job and imaginary evidence of mental trauma without any prior reports to the better business bureau.

That said, I did quit. The company ended up going under a little after the owner found out the drunken ops manager was embezzling. I got a job that paid better and had much better coworkers. The CEO was a dick but that's work for ya.

Good point. I'm at least glad you got out of there.

I am fortunate that I never worked at such a place.

Black, really? Not a nice bead-blasted stainless steel finish with cocobolo grips? :D That plus a .45 caliber muzzle really tends to get the attention of whoever has it pointed at the bridge of their nose.

Seriously, though, yeah, that's aggravated assault .. I can see a prosecutor making a real good case for the printer being a weapon in that context. (And of note, some states, including mine, explicitly permit using deadly force to prevent any of a short list of serious felonies, one of which is aggravated assault..)

Now, okay, as a hairless ape myself, I understand the knee-jerk response to make something -- anything -- not be your fault. To actually follow through on this impulse to this extent is, as Crowley once wrote, going "down into the Maelstrom of Insanity with colours flying".

You mean smashing a computer with a sledgehammer (http://consumerist.com/consumer/notag/man-teaches-apple-to-not-repair-his-macbook-by-smashing-it-with-sledgehammer-270968.php?cpage=2) when no one at BigCompany will repair it isn't the fastest way to get a replacement? Dang. Someone tell this guy.

Ah, the customer who has issues above and beyond the product/service $employer sold him. (Why are they almost always male?) It would be funny to see what people do when their anger management issues come to the fore, if it weren't so sad, and if it weren't for the fact that such people are very good at blaming other people for such behavior.

Most of them are subtler than that, though, and seem to settle for being as difficult as possible on the phone, falling back on (possibly feigned) technical ignorance that makes one wonder how the person ever survived childhood, throwing tantrums and threatening to both sue and publicly libel the vendor the moment something doesn't go the way they like .. I could go on but it would just be preaching to the choir. Sometimes they're absolutely delightful people around their co-workers but take a particularly sadistic delight in being complete dicks to tech support .. I think I hate that two-faced variety the worst, because it makes me think I'm the only one who sees this darker true nature in a person whose pleasant demeanor at work is obviously calculated and manipulative ..
