Nowadays how can you be so completely computer illiterate that you don't even know how to delete temporary files? On your own computer...

You're new at this aren't you?

Agreed.

OP, if that's your major gripe about computer illiteracy, then you ain't seen nothin' yet.

That's nothing. I've had to explain what double-clicking is.

I've had calls where 'the computer isnt working' and it's either
A: turned off B: plugged into a power-strip which is turned off.

Multiple calls of people trying to write CDs in a CD-ROM drive.

I've seen people stick USB drives into an RJ45 jack on a computer (it fits!) and ask why they can't see their files.

Did you know that with enough force you can put a type B USB cable in sideways?

THAT'S dedication to the clueless cause!

As is folding a 5.25" floppy so that it fits into a 3.5" floppy drive.

No way. No one is that stupid.

Oh yes. They are.

I wish that they were not. But they are.

Man had a PhD, too, IIRC.

Guilty. My laptop has a USB port immediately adjacent to the ethernet. Blind fumbling me put it in the wrong one. But I figured it out pretty quick. ;-)

one of my users extended his USB cable with a piece of cat5.. 2 points for originality, -100 for burning out the USB ports.

I had to demo right-click, copy, and paste last year. To a vp of the company. Why does she make more than me?

I've done that to plenty of co-workers ;P

"Please click on..."

"Is that a right click, or a left click?"

"You're on a Mac. Look at your mouse, how many buttons does it have?"

"One."

"That answers your question."

"No, it doesn't. Is that a right click, or a left click?"

Get an MCSE? *ba-doom-tish*

Hey, HEY, HEY!

Not all MCSE's are clueless wonders.

But there sure are enough of them to make the rest of us look like morons...

actually, unless you're in tech support or really into system maintenance, I'd be surprised if any user did know how. It's just not a common action for the average computer user.

Car owners receive a manual with a new car that tells them about maintenance. It's also common knowledge thanks to the advertising efforts of the lube places and oil companies.

Have you ever seen PC maintenance documented in anything approaching layman's terms in a user manual, or in a commercial?

It's just that people aren't taught these things. It's why they pay us for help.

i've been much happier telling my friends i don't know anything about their windows computers since i bought a mac. I fear the day they buy macs so that i can help them.

I had that happen. After seeing my house full of Macs, a cousin went out and bought a Mac. And she lives an hour away and can't take directions over the phone worth a damn!

Considering there are users out there who can't even frigging well work out how to turn on their computers, consider yourself lucky!

Most of them seem to be in management.

Why is it, we who control the machines upon which the world depends... are lead by people who can't even find the 'ON' button?

I spent 15 minutes the other day trying to get through to someone that username goes in the username box, password goes in the password box, and NEVER vice versa.

I think it's completely retarded that you even NEED to delete temporary files. They're TEMPORARY. They should delete THEMSELVES!

A frequent call I got at Dell:

THEM: Can you help me set up my computer?
ME: Sure. (leads them through all cord connections) Now, let's put the startup CD in the CD drive...
THEM: What's a CD?

Late, but I just joined. Trust me, my boss/dad is just as bad. If it isn't his email or ebay, I have to do it for him. Can't even walk him through it because the next time he needs printer heads cleaned or a disk defragmentation or pictures put on his computer from his camera I have to do it again anyway.

There was also the time I had to explain how to drag and drop from one folder to another over the phone. That time though it was my sister. x_x
