Date: 2007-11-20 06:07 pm (UTC)I've had calls where 'the computer isnt working' and it's either
A: turned off B: plugged into a power-strip which is turned off.
Multiple calls of people trying to write CDs in a CD-ROM drive.
I've seen people stick USB drives into an RJ45 jack on a computer (it fits!) and ask why they can't see their files.

Date: 2007-11-20 07:08 pm (UTC)Guilty. My laptop has a USB port immediately adjacent to the ethernet. Blind fumbling me put it in the wrong one. But I figured it out pretty quick. ;-)

Date: 2007-11-20 07:27 pm (UTC)Have you ever seen PC maintenance documented in anything approaching layman's terms in a user manual, or in a commercial?
It's just that people aren't taught these things. It's why they pay us for help.

Date: 2007-11-20 10:27 pm (UTC)Most of them seem to be in management.
Why is it, we who control the machines upon which the world depends... are lead by people who can't even find the 'ON' button?

"You're on a Mac. Look at your mouse, how many buttons does it have?"
"One."
"That answers your question."
"No, it doesn't. Is that a right click, or a left click?"

THEM: What's a CD?
