O.k. here's some back ground. I am currently the lead technician on a project to replace 5000+ systems for a large health care company. I recently went down and replaced the administration department PC's with new laptops. Everything went smooth as could be. The next day I get called to the office of my boss saying his laptop was not working correctly. I go down to find out what's up and he tells me his wireless isn't working. I verify that it's working fine at the moment and ask him about it. He says that it wasn't working at his house. I ask "Do you have a wireless router?" and get the response "Oh, I have to have one of those? I thought it just picked up from wires connected to my desktop." How in the world do these people ever get into management. This guy is in charge of 300 IT people.

Live becomes easier if you realise that (at least in theory) people get into management because they know how to manage people, not because they know how to (diagnose network issues/write software/sell widgets/do whatever it is their subordinates do).

And conversely, people who can do above-mentioned stuff and get promoted into management may have greater empathy for what their subordinates do or have a better understanding of technical issues involved in some decisions, but may be bad at leading people.

*shrug* Different people have different roles.

I was going to post the story of the lady who bought a portable machine with built in wireless card, thinking that was all she needed to get onto the Internet, then bought a wireless router and proceeded to plug it into the wall and ignore the error indication on its LED's, then called tech support because it was working OK for a little while but then quit, but you beat me to it. :)

(Her Internet connection? Dialup. And why did it work before and then quit? Because her neighbors caught her stumbling their WLAN and locked her out. And what did she want us to do? "Just fix it." At least I think that's what she said, the unidentifiable Asian accent wasn't easy to decipher even though the attitude came through crystal clear ..)

Had a guy once call me about a company laptop, which he usually used as a dedicated connected desktop. He wanted to confirm that the wireless function had a clean bill of health, as he was going to be working away from his desk over the next couple of days.

1700 miles away from his desk.

"Um, sir, the range on your wireless is maybe 100 feet, tops."

And of course he wasn't going to be anywhere near the offices in the other city, or a public WiFi point, nooo...
