(l)u: Hi. I put a CD in the drive of my computer and it exploded, damaging the drive. Is this covered by warranty?

me: no. no its not. exploding cds are not considered a manufacturing defect of the drive. buy another CDROM drive, and check the integrity of the cds you put in it next time.

my team leader and myself laughed ourselves silly over this one :)

This actually happened to me a few months ago. I put a CD in the drive and it literally exploded into a million pieces. I just threw the drive in the trash and bought a new one.

this has been happening a lot with modern cd drives.
CD's were designed to spin at 1x, not 100x. The inertia is too much for them and they rip apart.
It's no one's fault except the consumers who keep wanting to get more and more performance out of an old spec.

God I hate high speed CD-Rom drives.. I think I have a 32X in my sony, a 4X in my old celeron and whatever my powerbook came with.
