Here's a call I got my dad while I was home last night trying to watch Monday Night Football...

Me: Hey, dad... what's up?
Dad:   Just on my way home - got a question for you...
Me:  Um. Okay...
Dad: If you delete a file, is it gone forever?
Me:  Nope. If it's not in your recycle bin you can use a program like File Rescue Plus or...
Dad: Do I have a recycle bin?
Me: Uh, yeah. It's on your desktop. (I know he's bad, but not THAT bad.)
Dad: Are you sure? What if I deleted the recycle bin?
Me: You can't delete the recycle bin. I was over there yesterday and it's on your desktop. Why, what's up?
Dad: Well, I think I accidentally deleted my My Documents folder and my resume was in there.
Me: Oh, that's cool. (Knowing that he's not happy where he is.) What are you applying for?
Dad: There was a tech support job posted for a local company up here. I'm gonna go for it, you know since I used to do that for Eckerd's.
Me: Uh...Right. Well, good luck. Let me know how it goes. I'm gonna go back to watching the game.

By doing tech support for Eckerds he meant he had the "Choose Your Own Adventure" version of everything being scripted for him since he was supporting old POS hardware.

Heh. My wife used to do tech support for Eckerd. They ran their stores on SCO Unix machines that were ancient. They didn't want to put any money into upgrading their systems or their IVR hardware. Talk about PoS. Oh well, they were listed as one of the 10 worst run companies, in the Fortune 1000.

No shit, I used to work for them, too. But not in tech support or IT. When I first started working there in the summer of '97 when I was in college, the data entry dept. was using IBM PC'S! At that time I was new to computers and was like "WTF are these things?! They look ancient!". Looking back on that now, I wish I would have know that was a red flag to run away - quickly - and not look back. I worked there for 4 years... though they did replace them with new PCs shortly after I started.

Was that at corporate, on Bryan-Dairy road? The IVR machines in the back of the stores were these old IBM systems. they did ok but the IVR cards would die if you just blinked at them. They coulda' updated to a newer type of IVR set up but didn't want to put the money in.

Ah, IBM 320s and 4690s! No wonder they are being sold again. Must have cost a fortune to upgrade those stores.

Did your Dad do the field repairs or was he in IT? Either way he probably knows me as "IVR Kathy".
