Aug. 19th, 2006 09:30 amI work for a small ISP in Lancaster, Ohio. I hate this place more than anything else in the world.
I come in today, and our phones are ringing off the hook because the mail server is down. We can't ping or telnet in to the machine, none of us have a key to the office where all our servers are, and we can't get ahold of the boss either at home, at the other office, or on his cell phone.
We could just call the mail server administrator, but OH WAIT, he fucking quit 3 months ago and they haven't hired anyone to replace him!

Date: 2006-08-19 03:00 pm (UTC)change the outgoing message on the phone queue about the mail server, dump all the calls to it, and assign a person to work the door issue, preferaly the biggest, strongest person there. :) Once the door is open, then you can figure out why the mail server has gone netlost, and recover from it.

it was good! congested traffic tho.
also, i second your *stabby* on bosses not replacing needed people. they think it's cheaper if they just spread someone's work amongst the remaining employees. i've been there.

Date: 2006-08-20 01:21 am (UTC)I've have kicked it in (if possible), but it just occurs to me that a locksmith, building maintenance or the Boss's Boss's boss MIGHT be able to get in (and you've passed the buck very nicely if not!)

Date: 2006-08-20 07:14 am (UTC)The maths is simple - you will save the company thousands of dollars in lost business as opposed to $100or so for a new door.
I'd have waited an hour, tops.

Date: 2006-08-20 02:26 pm (UTC)problem is our servers are on the other side of town, and there were only 3 of us there yesterday-- whoever left to go over there would have really been screwing the other 2 guys, as we were probably busy enough yesterday that we could have used 5 people...
