[identity profile] sheryls.livejournal.com posting in [community profile] techrecovery
Good morning! i've never posted here before, so i hope this is kosher. A little friday techie giggle.

Backstory: i'm not in tech support (i'm a dev), but my boyfriend is in WAN support, and his buddy from work moved to Ireland to do more of the same, and this morning we got this email:

Issue: WAN links from $COMPANY CDC to Limerick and Cork are down.

Guys.. this is from one of our customers... Unreal.

Reason for outage:
It seems that a farmer in mallow takes his pigs to the market every 2
months across our wan lines.

If the pigs are really heavy we lose the links until Marty Murphy and his
brother Michael come along to fix it....

:D

I have killed men for less painful puns.

Well, not really, but I do hate you a lot.

That's not so outrageous... I used to go to school in New Mexico, and the school had two T-1 lines, both of which came from the north. They ran right under an arroyo (a ditch), and whenever there would be a bad rainstorm, the lines would usually get damaged, killing our connection.

There's something to be said for geographic diversity, if you can afford it.

lol.

When I was at [isp], my boss told me about the ordeal it was getting a 1000 pair cable from the telco put into the isp's office back when they did local dialup back in the days of 28.8k. They had to use a 10 ton truck to pull the stuff. IIRC, they used every spare line that the CO had at the time.

He still had a 3 foot segment of the raw cable in his office when I started there. It was most impressive.

Not os mythical :P

Lesse, since I've been working ISP's we've had northern states lose all connectivity because some bumfuck in NSW put a backhoe through the main feed linking them to the Sydney jumpoff point.....then the same happened again up in lower QLD (I've seen that one happen no less than four times believe it or not) Then there was the drilling rig out to sea that went straight through Australia's pipelines and killed 98% of our international browsing for a couple weeks (that one was fun) And last, but not least, my personal favourite was when works going on for the Melbourne Commonwealth Games fucked up our NOC and severed the connection between our Radius and that of a port provider we were using....

We've got a link to an outlying facility that has been hit by construction digging FOUR times in the last 18 months. We're still trying to get the last *temporary* patch replaced by something permanent.

We recently opened a new full-scale building next to that facility, and proposed feeding the outlier from the building instead. Nope -- THAT would be "too expensive".

Seems perfectly reasonable to me! They should have made the WAN line capable of coping with passing livestock - Mallow is a farming area. Sometimes people in ICT forget that life also happens - it wasn't so much unreal as real!
