I think you should have to pass a test that covers basic logic and computing before you download a beta OS. If I get ONE more email from some fuckbag wondering why our firewall doesn't work on MS Vista Beta 2, I might have to jump from my 6th floor office.  They email in all upset 'cause their systems are vulnerable... well, yeah, fucktard! I have compiled a rather nasty signature on outlook since I get chapped everytime I get one and I am sick of typing the same reply.  Has no one ever heard of a test environment? What a concept! Behold the gem below from this asshat:

It appears that Trend Micro PC-cillin, and F-Secure are the only companies that's keeping an eye on the new Windows Vista Beta2 version of the upcoming OS.
They are currently writing their products to conform with this new Windows.

What are the other Companies waiting for?
Ninety percent of the software failed on my Vista system.  NO VERSIONS of the Zonelabs prodducts will run, or install, for that matter.

Moreover, I have no confidence in the imbedded firewall offered in Windows Vista.  Running the LeakTest by www.GRC.com proved disasterous.  The test (leaktest) repeatedly flunked, permitting easy access and penetration of the GRC firewall.  This is no small matter!

I need to replace/disable the Vista firewall with one that's compatible with this system.
"Where's the beef?"
If you can fulfill this bill, please let me know asap, because this is an urgent appeal.

EDIT: I don't even know what to tell this guy.  He doesn't realize that no one is gonna develop software for an OS that is constantly changing.

'NOTHER EDIT: I also just realized that he put "where's the beef?" in his email. Way to use an 80's pop culture reference, chode! And I've decided here that I want a martial arts dummy and to label it "MS Vista Beta Tester" so I can kick it in the crotch everytime I get one of these emails.

Defender is certainly not a one-stop solution. It usually takes a combination of it and at least one other anti-spyware app (I like Ad-Aware) to get everything. And on particularly tenacious spyware sometimes even that's not good enough. HiJackThis is good for that stuff.

What's your opinion on McAfee?

That's interesting. The impression I had of McAfee vs. Norton was 180 degrees from yours, though I admit I've not done testing anywhere near as rigorous as you have.

I've just encountered several customers with up-to-date McAfee Security Center installations and systems that are nonetheless completely borked, mostly due to viruses and spyware. It's never seemed to me that McAfee does much of anything, and when it does catch spyware, it's unable to remove it.

I recently bought a scratch-n-dent Dell box and was considering getting PC-cillin thrown in, but I couldn't find (among my circle) anyone who had an opinion one way or the other. I wish I had talked with you first, since I'd like to give it a try.

On all three (McAfee, Norton and PCC), the anti-spyware features are complete and utter crap.

If they catch anything at all, which is rare, they usually can't remove it or even quarantine it. PCC usually says, "Action: The item was detected."

Sort of like the security guard sitting there, gun drawn, watching someone rob the store and just saying, "OMG! OMG! OMG THEY'RE ROBBING THE STORE BLIND! I SEE IT! OMGOMGOMGOMG! I CAN SEE IT HAPPENING!" but not actually doing anything.

I would concur with your evaluation of McAfee Vs. Norton. Norton is a memory hog, and in one particular instance, it searched and searched my computer for a virus that it would tell me was there, but couldn't delete. When I ran a scan, it never found it. I'd just get this random "virus detected" warning, but nothing beyond that. The second I uninstalled Norton and installed McAfee, I couldn't get to the scan button, it found the virus first, and asked me if I wanted to delete or quarantine it. I've been a McAfee fan since. I would agree that although not completely spectacular end all be all, the PUP/Spyware removal fom McAfee is better than Norton's. I haven't had much experience with the PCC version, but if you get McAfee with a non-freeware spyware removal, you should be set. I recommend Spyware Doctor, myself.

Yeah, if my machine is going slow and the hard disk is thrashing, it's a safe bet that MsMpEng.exe is responsible.

I am a Brit.

I am mentally pronouncing the "one" in "OneCare" as "wan", which kinda expresses my opinion of it... ;)

He sounds like one of those "knows just enough to be dangerous" types.

What's your company or departmental policy on supporting beta software? Or software that is not on the IT department's official list of apps/OSs?

Might be time to create one. Although telling him "Sir, we do not support that OS," will probably only result in a round of "Well, the person I spoke to yesterday said you did," or "Oh yeah? Let me talk to your supervisor."

here's what you do.
google up a definition of beta software.
highlight the part where it says "unsupported."
e-mail it to him, fax it to him, and snailmail it to him.

he'll get the point sooner or later.

Send a copy to his supervisor too.

I'm going to guess that the 90% of the companies that are waiting are waiting for either Vista to go Gold, or to actually ship before putting their vista compatible apps out.

Symantec and NAI (aka Mcafee) do not strike me as companies that would put out any retail products for an OS that's still in Beta.

But I'm pretty sure they are developing for it. they'd be shooting themselves in the crotch otherwise.

I blame Google and their "Beta is cool!" attitude.

Pah, that's nothing!
I have the same stuff on a machine with a tripple boot (xp, vista, linux) and it's stable too.

Huh. I had to uninstall it also (because IE7 B3 insisted upon it) but had no problems. It did take a while to uninstall, though.

True, but unfortuantly Google advertise it as "Look, beta, shiny!", rather than "Look, beta, test, buggy, shiny!".

(or they do, but inside Jo Bloggs's brain "test" and "buggy" get ignored)

"Microsoft Windows Vista is currently in BETA mode. meaning it's only available for testers and developers. it has not been released to the public and is not currently in a finished state. the problems you are experiencing are typical of BETA products that are not yet ready for public retail release, products such as these are in flux and constantly changing due to feedback from beta testers. It is suggested that you contact microsoft or the product vendors you mentioned with your concerns and feedback so that they can continue to fine tune windows vista prior to it's actual release."

... or you could use "fuck off dipshit"

depends on how diplomatic you're feeling ;)

GRC... ugh.

I wonder what the "leaktest" at GRC would think of the PIX... or how about the m0n0wall.
