We have a designer here, a lovely girl who's very talented, but she has an issue with emailing attachments. Today she attached two PDFs totaling...

320 megabytes...

to an email message, and then wondered why her email had stopped working.

Somebody please. Make her stop. ::sob::

We have warning messages that pop up in the email client when people try to do stupid things like that. They have to enter their unique userID to "authorise" the massive expenditure growling at them from the screen. It makes some of them stop and think, and anyone doing it anyway can't later pretend they didn't know, because the email system stores their response.

Effectively, if enough senior-level people are inconvenienced by something, measures get approved to address it.

The Exchange server won't send anything over 5 meg, but that doesn't prevent the Mac client from trying to send the message until the Exchange server decides to just lock the account for the rest of the day.

Man, I hate Entourage on Macs. Will be so happy when the new Intel ones will be able to run Windows apps in OS X. That would be sweet.

Weird since I give them all a Distiller pre-set called "Really Small" that makes files even smaller than the stock "Smallest File Size" setting. I guess I should call it "Use This for E-Mail."

I've had them get a PDF via e-mail, print it off, hand it to the guy in the next office, them scan it in as a TIFF, and e-mail it to a customer....

Our Mortgage department has a division with printers on everyone's desk, AND several big huge networked HP 9000s, and they spend the entire day printing reams and reams of paper. And another division that scans those reams and reams of paper (100 ppm plus, huge $25,000 scanners) into an image database and... throws the paper away.

I mean yeah, it's gotta go to clients and owners and lawyers and God knows who else in between, but still... oy.

The last place I was at we had a limit of 20 MB on our emails.

Some joker sent a 10 MB bitmap to all our remote sites (which were on dialup) in addition to the ~250K PDF on a monthly basis.

I wondered why I'd get a slew of calls right afterward about the remote sites not being able to get their email...

I endedup shipping out CDs with Acrobat reader out to a few of the sites, as most of the sites already had the reader installed already...

Yup, we got a brand-new iMac in and I was playin'. That one came out that way just by chance; it just stupefies my wife altogether. Macs rool (or at least they will when the Intel transition is finally over).
