If a reliable internet connection is so fucking critical to your very important business, why are you using a cable modem with a 'residential' service package?

You've told me more than once that each hour the connection is down is costing you thousands of dollars. If that's the case (which it isn't, you're clearly less rich than you're trying to sound) then maybe you can afford to install a T-1.

... or hell, maybe install 1 or 2 redundant links that you can fall back on in said occurrences.

I always hated that "I rely on this service to run my business" shit. Really? You really didn't think out the necessities of an e-business very well then did you?

Considering that most ISPs will cheerfully sell you a business line with an SLA package just about anywhere (for the most part- there was one place where putting a T-1 in would have run something like $1200 a month), the "I'm loosing thousands of dollars an hour" makes me think you are a spammer or script kiddie controlling a botnet to do your making earning deeds. Those people I hate with an undying passion equal to the temperature at the core of the Sun.

Yeah that line is dragged out a LOT and if I ever press for detail, you can guarantee the "business" is eBay shilling, or incompetant online shares trading of some kind.

It's down during the time they would have finally started winning in their on-line poker, they just know it!

You're using this Residential Service to run a business? Thanks for that information. This usage is against your TOS. I'll be cancelling your account now. Would you like to sign up for Business Service now?

Thanks,
and Have a Nice Day.

Exactly. Bite, hard, and never back down. It's the fastest and most satisfying way to deal with TOS violaters.

My response:
If you want a faultless service, find an ISP with a Service Level Agreement. Now, if you don't mind, rack off or I'll close your account for the sake of it :)

I bet most of them wouldn't even understand what getting TOSsed off their ISP meant. But hey, our purpose in life according to our employer is to bear their slurs since they'd sooner change to a competitor rather than pay the business rate...

Now if you're the only game in town (say, the cable company)... THEN let's play hardball! :)

You don't even need a T-1, most cable and DSL providers have business service. It's not even all that expensive. (I paid something like $150 a month for 512K SDSL, and am currently paying $90 a month for 5000/512K business cable, complete with SLA)

Our business package starts at $49/month for 3000/768k with 99% uptime SLA. But yet, suggesting this to customers whining about downtime somehow makes me an extortionist.

Huh?

Maybe I should try that excuse. Except I don't actually run a business, per se.

"You're costing me thousands of ISK (http://www.eve-online.com)! OMG!"
