Paco's profanity-packed post* reminded me that some true horrible web-based genius has been resurrected: Tristan Farnon's Leisure Town website is back up. (Paco's rant reminded me of the story 'Q.A. Confidential', a story of fraud, theft, and psychotic murderous rage in a dot-com startup.)

For those not familiar, 'Leisure Town' is... Well, it's not quite a web comic, since there's no actual drawing involved, but the stories are told in panel form. Using cheesy little bendable toys, photos of urban San Francisco, and some truly inspired Photoshop work, Farnon manages to create an alternative universe where everything may seem sugary-sweet, but where all goodness has died. Imagine a Rankin-Bass stop-action animation project (R-B produced all those sappy Christmas specials: 'Rudolph', 'Little Drummer Boy', etc.) with Pieter Bruegel the Elder as art director and John Woo editing the script. It is an urban environment where all surfaces are shiny and clean... Much like the exterior facades of its rubberized inhabitants. There's plenty of filth to go around though, and you don't need to dig very far.

Farnon is/was a long-time writer and editor for that lil' catalog of horrors known as rotten.com; both his seemingly bleak world-view and refusal to engage in good public manners carry over into his Leisure Town stories. His favorite epithets are "faggot" and "cocksucker"; IMHO this does not reflect any homophobia on Farnon's part, but his own concious decision to be as inflammatory as possible. 'Political correctness' does not exist, and profanity-soaked tirades are the norm. The personas created --- the bong-sucking spaceman & -woman, gun-toting giraffes, a porn-obsessed pig, rabbits who exist only to be pummeled or hurl abuse, oversexed cows, misogynist bears --- cannot be described as likeable: they are at best annoying, at worst violently evil. Dogs seem to be the only creatures with any dignity and positive moral attributes. (The gray Scottie in the story 'The Dog Mess' is the only character, in any of the tales, whose actions are uniformly noble.)

Shit, listen to me babble. Go check out Leisure Town... When you are home; some visual content is definitely NSFW. Even if you hate Farnon's misanthropic writing, you'll dig his PhotoShop skills.

*Hey, a little alliteration is good for the soul.
