I just overheard the management structure talking to the lead techs about how much paper we waste by sending out instructions on how to perform a laptop shell swap in the field with the laptops.
It uses three sheets of paper and we do about 20 or so a day.
Their first solution was to put the docs on a shared drive. This is a problem because not all our users work in networked locations, so the shared drive won't be useful
The new idea (and likely to be implemented) is to burn the docs to a CD and ship that. Then the EU ships the CD back when they're finished.
No one seems to grasp that THE END USERS CANNOT READ THE CD OR ACCESS A SHARED DRIVE 'CAUSE THE DAMN LAPTOP DOESN'T WORK UNTIL THEY FOLLOW THE DIRECTIONS THAT WE SEND OUT....
*headdesk*
*headdesk*

My salvation comes in the hope that my lead, who was involved, is just playing dumb because he's pissed off at getting a forced lateral promotion to a group he has no interest in being with.

Date: 2006-04-24 07:36 pm (UTC)I could fathom them putting instructions online and telling the user to log into "some computer" and print them out on their own.
I would so be fired if I worked there.
"Boss, I got a great idea! Rather than spend thousands of dollars on shipping costs, reimbursement forms, development, and confusing phone calls with CD, why don't we just mail them the instructions. That will ony cost us 43 cents between printing and postage!"
