Customer wants a brand-new modem.
Not one we've installed somewhere else. A BRAND NEW one.. in the box... wrapped!
Why? She has an immune system problem.

Umm.. hi? The tech that handles ALL these modems, EVERY DAY is going to have far more germs on him when he comes into your house to install it than the modem that's been in his truck will EVER have.

*shakes head*
STUPID PEOPLE!

Actually, that's not out of line at all. I've had to service a lot of equipment that was used by smokers, and it was an irritant to me, and I don't have any sensitivity issues. In fact, I refused a service call because the guy was a smoker and had ashes and over-flowing ashtrays all over his computer desk. There were even tar stains on his computer. I would most certainly not want any hardware that had been in his apartment unless it had be run through an autoclave, twice. Can you guarentee that the used modem had never been around cigarette smoke?

Still, the point is, she has a medical reason for this request. The tech is going to be in and out in a short time, but that modem is going to stay around for a while. If it is an external modem, and I had a major medical condition, I would not want something that somebody's kids were sneezing all over brought into my home. She may have a very good reason why she wants to minimize her exposure to germs. It may very well be an issue of how well her immune system can cope with things you and I take for granted.

There is that, but something like that would also be accompanied by the request to make sure the install tech was a non smoker.

Possible, but as presented incomplete.

She could boil her modem for 3 minutes before using it. :P
