Person of Greatly Higher Rank Than Me: "I need a new docking station."
Me: "Yes, -rank-, what's the problem?"
PoGHRTM: "My internet's slow."
Me: *headdesk* "Web sites are loading slowly? We are having trouble reaching the outside world right now, ." (We're in Iraq...)
PoGHRTM: "Someone told me that was caused by the docking station."
Me: "No, -rank-, I can assure you that it's not."
PoGHRTM: "Ok, Thanks. Out here."

Sigh.......

Well, at least he didn't try to argue with you about it or anything.

So few stories here have such happy ending.

Usually they require to shut up and bring them the damned dock station anyway - just in case.

Man tech support in the armed services must suck. I mean I have to be polite to the custs to a degree, but I can basicaly tell them to pull their head out of their ass without going up on charges for it at least :)

yeah, i can imgaine that "with all due respect, general, are you really that fucking stupid?" would not go over well at all...

"colonel... colonel....colonel, please. yes, i am trying to help you, but i need you to do *exactly* as i say..."

man, i'm really glad sometimes i didn't take the military route. i'd have gotten into too damn much trouble

I feel your pain. It's a hard day when you have to argue with a captain over something he/she just doesn't understand. I suppose it helps being a civilian and them having no pull over you :)

Heh. phyrewall, I work at a satellite broadband isp that has soldiers in iraq (aus ones) as some of our clients.

Ive been woken up on call at 5am over the secure army comms by some grunt complaining his sat wasnt locked ... I ring back via some complicated connect via defence in Canberra... I get some other grunt... he more or less says "Daves not here, man"

I go back to bed.

Yeah, that job was fun.
