I get an astonishing assortment of comments from users who probably shouldn't have jobs that require them to use a computer.

Today's gem: "I can't type this password. It's not possible, it's got an upside-down lowercase 'i' in it. There's no key for that!"

It took me a minute; the system-generated password includes special characters. She was referring to an exclamation point.

I very carefully didn't laugh.

Isn't that why the "mute" button exists?

There is no appropriate witty barb for this level of stupidity...
It's like calling a comma a 'period with a skid-mark'

oy

Don't forget the "two-dots thing" (colon) or the "period and comma" (semicolon) or the "squiggle" (tilde) or the "splat" (either # or *, depending on who you're talking to).

heh, cool. I feel fortunate that I've almost never had to tell anyone to use that one.

I can't remember where I read about a user referring to * as the 'squishy-bug'.

It bothers me enough when people call it 'Asterix'. ^^;

I just read some password reset directions here at work, written by the "level 2s," which refer to them as "astericks."

I tell people all the time: computers are not toys, they're not fads, they're not solely for nerds, and that the days when one could forgivably assume otherwise are over. The PC is an integral part of working in just about any business or service environment.

...which is why it continues to boggle my mind that some companies don't seem to train or test their employees for basic computer skills.

Reminds me of a Dilbert comic that I know I kept but cant find for the life of me.

Dilbert was saying in a meeting that the only thing their new product would be good for is if they marketed it as a rust inhibitor for people who spit when they type. Then his boss said that he needed one of those, he spits a lot and his 'i' turned upside down. At which point somebody explained "That's the exclamation point."

...

It's, uhm, funnier to see it. I'm going to go over here now . . .
