My friend's mother tripped over the powercord to her laptop. The laptop was on the floor so there was no drop damage but she ripped out the power port off of the laptop. The result it the laptop still works but there is no way to charge the battery or even turn the thing on. She asked if I could fix it.

Umm...no. I *might* be able to solder it back in place, but I can't vouch that it will work and I might kill the whole thing in the process.

But guess what...its the same model as my laptop! So I'm going to use my laptop to charge the battery and that should give me enough time to back up her data. For payment I get the broken laptop. Which means I have a spare battery, spare powercord, spare LCD, and so on.

About time I cashed in on karma points!

heh, screw that. Do your best at soldering that sucker back on, and have a second laptop. ^_^

Oh yeah, I'm going to try. If anything this finally gives me an excuse to buying the "Cold Heat" soldering iron. The worst I can do is ruin an already ruined motherboard

And the thought has crossed my mine to fix it, sell both laptops and get a new laptop. But the piece of mind of having spare parts is also enticing...its a tough call.

Used to solder a lot of power connectors in iBooks, a few years ago. Elementary school kids are rough. So are college kids.

Its nice when companies come up with practical solutions to common problems, like the new PowerMacs having a magnetic power connector. I hope other companies adapt something similar.
