Anyone else have this problem with windows XP?

I go to start, then run (to type in calc or notepad or whatever) and then my taskbar dissapears and then when it comes back the programs that I have open are re-arranged on it... I HATE this because I have things arranged in a certain way at work, and then it even hides some of my programs that are running like icq and I have to reboot to get it to fix...

any clue?

I assume you mean in the tray area (next to the clock?). If so, this is explorer crashing and reloading, and unfortunatly, I have noticed that some programs don't reload their entries on the tray. You can close and reopen the offending program, or log off and log back on.

Stupid windows trick, I am afraid.

Sounds like explorer.exe (not to be confused with iexplore.exe) is crapping out on you. Do you get any illegal operation messages or anything? You may want to search on support.microsoft.com (http://support.microsoft.com) for more info.

I'm doubtful that this will work, but it's worth a try:

right-click the taskbar, click properties and ensure 'group similar taskbar buttons' is not checked.

This happens to me too, and only at work where I generally have two different accounting databases, OE, our phone monitor, notepad and at least 6 explorer windows open at any given time. I don't know how to fix it either. :(

two things, first if you are running an nt based kernel you can tell it to run each instance as its won process wich if you crash one they all dont go, helped much on my XP box while im tormenting it and at work wich is running 2k, my second solution is that i actually stopped useing IE for much of aything web related and use opera, much leaner and more stable for me and i only run IE once in a while for those sites that run under nothing else (there are fewer than you might imagine)

as for 98, there isnt much i can reccomend as i hated it with a buring passion and it felt the same way about me as well.

yes... it looks like an explorer.exe crash, I have that pretty often (about ten times in a day) on win2k then some icons in the systray disappear.
I noticed it happens only when I have some background programs loaded. I would try to close a background running program, run notepad or anything that would make an explorer crash, close another program, etc. to see which program is causing that error.

Try also the archives of Usenet via Google Groups (http://groups.google.com/groups?num=100&hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&oe=utf-8&newwindow=1&safe=off&q=explorer.Exe+caused+error+xp&btnG=Google+Search), I found some posts that may help, like this one (http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&oe=utf-8&newwindow=1&safe=off&selm=b31601c20c24%2459f9e320%249be62ecf%40tkmsftngxa03).

I've not had this happen myself, but it does sound like explorer crashes as everyone is hinting at. Windows never repopulates your system tray after a crash. The only time you see Icons showing back up is if the programs start up with explorer again, or if the program is particularly agressive about how it displays in the system tray. As for the reason, I suggest you check your event veiwer in Computer management. It should at least lead you in the general direction of what is causing the crashes and how to fix it.

On a side note, if you find its not a specific program, look to your hardware. XP is a hell of a lot less forgiving for bad hardware then win98 or even win2k is, and I've seen a faulty ram chip crash explorer in XP, and give no problems in any other OS.
