IP Chicken! that's great. I was expecting the Burger King chicken saying "Your IP address is: some.eye.pee.address; What would you like the chicken to do now?"
omg you wouldn't believe how many people have NAT turned off in their routers with their POINT OF SALES SYSTEMS sitting RIGHT out on the net where any hacker can just watch credit card transactions day in, day out.
i subsequently found out SBC has been using NAT off as a default setting for most of their business users. yet another reason i boycott sbc.
I wanted to smack the guy at the CO who bounced the ticket back to the frontlines because "the customer could ping 127.0.0.1 so there was nothing wrong with the line card"
unfortunately, no. i deal with lots of sbc's customers and they are often within the same range, but there's no telling. however, sometimes i'll give an example: "what is your external ip address? like 70 dot something something something or 68 dot something." but usually that's after the first failed attempt.

Date: 2006-01-17 07:35 pm (UTC)I was mortified when I found out that our mail server was leaking it's internal, martian address to the real world.
I was even more mortified when I found that we were using a software proxy server as our firewall to the internet on the very same machine.
We got better.

Date: 2006-01-17 07:41 pm (UTC)some people need to stay the hell away from networking. in fact, most people need to stay the hell away from networking.
i get so peeved when i talk to self-described "network technicians" who are getting paid upwards of 50$/hr and have NO CLUE what NAT is.
urge to kill rising...
