I got called today to come take a look at the accounting file/printserver. Hike up there, the accts. manager is standing in front of it, and asks me why it's not working. Screen is dark, no noises are coming from the case.
I reach out and press the power button. Cue bootup of the machine, and the accts. manager freaking out that it should never be turned off.
(Said server is an old 386 with monochrome monitor, btw.)

Date: 2006-01-16 11:16 pm (UTC)Our old apps/hr/payroll server from before my time at company ---- was a 486 DX266, and it was sitting under a bench collecting dust. I eventaully gutted it before realizing that doing a case mode to it would require a welding rig. ;)
Last year before we moved the office, I had to go through what was termed "the pile", a bunch of very old, and creaky machines, and I noticed a Dell 386. Oddly enough, it still worked, and booted win 3.1 just fine. It went in the trash along with the bulk of the rest of the pile. ::snicker::

Date: 2006-01-16 11:55 pm (UTC)the next batch that we are getting ready to dumpster is likely to be a fair amount of Gateway E3200s that have seen about twice their rated lifespan... Most are Pentium 2-350, with 128 MB of PC66/100 DIMM memory.
They work, they are just waay slow.

Date: 2006-01-17 02:10 am (UTC)Couple things.
1) I'm not sure *if* I can get work to release them to me. We may use them internally for stuff.
2) I'm not sure *when* this will happen. The project that this is associated with has been pushed back at least once, and is likely to happen again.
